The wind howled across the red sands of the Abiding Boneyard. All of the dragons that lived in the Scarred Wasteland had retreated into their lairs, safely sheltered against the raging winds. All but one.

A young dragon lay in a heap in the middle of this wasteland, collapsed in exhaustion. He raised an arm to his face, futilely trying to guard against the stinging grit swept into his eyes. Limbs aching, he dragged himself toward the small dark blot on the horizon that he desperately hoped was shelter.

After what seemed like eons, he had finally reached this unknown shelter. He paused for a second, gasping in relief as he lay in the peaceful shadow of the small structure. It appeared to not be fully constructed, but to him, it was better than nothing. Slowly, he knocked on the door.

“Who is it?” a large bogsneak growled.

He spotted the young guardian and sneered in disgust.

“Please, please let me in,” the hatchling begged.

The bogsneak hesitated slightly.

“Come on in,” he grunted.

The guardian eagerly scrambled into the shelter, taking in all of the sights and sounds that surrounded him.

“What’s your name?” the bogsneak asked.

“I’m Carlos,” the hatchling replied.

Carlos sighed, lounging on a rock and watching the dragons repair a wall that had been torn away in the latest sandstorm.

I wonder what it’s like to be in charge?

He watched half-heartedly as Torbjorn, the leader of the clan, oversaw the proceedings of the day. All of a sudden, a dragon angrily stormed up to the boulder on which Torbjorn sat. Immediately, all movement ceased. Carlos straightened immediately eager to see what would happen.

“We’ve been working all day! What’s the point? The wall’s just going to be torn away the next time a storm hits? I say we stop working!” the dragon shouted.

A murmur rose from the crowd, and then it became a roar. Carlos’ eyes widened in shock.

“SILENCE!” Torbjorn boomed.

It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Carlos shrank back slightly in a combination of fear and awe.

“So, you suggest that we stop working?” Torbjorn hissed, his voice dangerously low.

The dragon nodded slowly, clearly regretting his actions.

“Well then, you can LEAVE. Go on, since you want to stop working,” Torbjorn said, “Either leave or follow my orders. It’s that simple.”

Everybody froze for a moment before hurriedly picking up their materials and resuming work.

Being in charge and having to establish your leadership seems… tedious.

Carlos eyes narrowed in glee.

Guess I’ll just have to take over once everything’s all nice and prepared for me.

Today’s the day. The day where I defeat Torbjorn. The day where I take charge. The day where I…

“CARLOS! Stop dilly-dallying and get to work!” Torbjorn shouted.

Carlos whirled around and rushed up to the rock where Torbjorn was standing. Adrenaline surged through his body as he tackled the bogsneak.

“Don’t tell me what to do!” Carlos growled.

Within seconds, Carlos found himself on his back, his various limbs all pinned down. Torbjorn snarled in disgust.

“Put him in the cells,” he spat, “We’ll figure out what to with this traitor tomorrow.”

Days passed, and eventually, Torbjorn himself came to visit Carlos.

“We’ve decided to let you stay,” Torbjorn said, “On one condition: You follow my orders. Understood?”

Carlos nodded, and Torbjorn opened the door.

From that day on, Carlos was an official member. Although that doesn’t necessarily mean he was wanted there. He tried, but it seemed like the other members of the clan didn’t feel like forgiving him for everything he’d done. But despite their grudges, Carlos is still proud to be in there.

Guardians are immense, protective creatures. The guardian species originates from Fishspine Reef, though the nature of The Search sees individuals wandering far from the birthplace of their race.

Guardian Dragons are one of the largest known dragon species. They have fins along their face, limbs, and chest. These rigid fins are armored, and can be held stiff or collapsed like fans. The fins can be flared outward to help protect the hide of the creature, making Guardians one of the most durable dragons in physical combat. Males of the species boast impressive beards that they go to great lengths to maintain.
