Aiterra was not one to go down lightly, she was not some fodder for the Organization to capture and she was definitely not going to die here in this dome. But as much as she wanted to rid herself of this place, Oceanheart was the one she wanted to escape with. When they were randomly assigned to District 2, the Skydancer was wary of the Tundra, districts meant nothing but early game alliances, but he smiled at her regardless, offering to trade stories trying to find some semblance of peace.

He was the one who tried to stay positive, even when battling hunger, infection, and running from the enemies that flanked them. Aiterra was more used to the hardships of battle and the terrors that came with those hard choices, offering to help him calm down when he startled awake at night, talking him down until he could breathe without shuddering breaths. He was slightly younger, his previous life was one of relative comfort and not yet accustomed to the violence many Rifters faced, so Aiterra tried her best to shield him. He was the one brightness in this dim arena.

So when it came to day 6, they were so close to escaping together, Neikea was the only other obstacle between them and freedom.

“Oceanheart, I’ll use your bomb against her, this landmine is our way out!” Aiterra whispered, listening to the eerie silence around them, trying to sense Neikea.

“Aiterra,” Oceanheart murmured, that gentle tone that Aiterra hated so much, one she could never replicate yet yearned to hear all the same. “You know how I feel about killing.”

Aiterra grimaced, thinking back to the only kill Oceanheart had ever committed; how shakey his paws were when drenched in blood, fur matted, the unshed tears in his eyes as he looked to Aiterra for comfort, “But it’s our only way to-”

“I won’t do it.” He said, turning away to stare into the fire, “That’s final.”

Aiterra sighed, rising up onto her feet, “Then I will.” Aiterra grabbed their bag, the explosive heavy inside, and went to end this.

Neikea wasn’t hard to find, though luring her close enough to the mine was. Neikea hadn’t survived this long for no reason, she could fight well and they had been at it for a long while. Aiterra could feel the gashes in her sides throb with each movement, but this pain was temporary. It was almost over and then they could finally be free.

“Aiterra!” Oceanheart yelled from behind the trees, panic on his face as he looked at the wounds she clutched.

“Well well, looks like we have a visitor,” Neikea swatted Aiterra to the side, rushing towards Oceanheart who’d appeared at the edge of the fray. “I’m tired of this runt surviving everyday while everyone else was killed!” She hissed, herding him towards the landmine at the edge of the forest.

Oceanheart frantically ran away, trying to escape the Pearlcatcher on his tail. Aiterra felt like it happened in slow motion, the seconds dragging by as they ran towards the small dirt pile she’d so carefully covered with leaves. Her muscles strained as she flew towards the pair, one last burst of energy as she shoved Oceanheart out of the way as the bomb went off.

The flash blinded her, the pain was too much to where it felt like nothing at all. This death wasn’t peaceful, entire parts of her flesh searing from the bone, but it was an end and now-

No.

No, this was wrong, Oceanheart wasn’t here.

He was still alive.

Aiterra refused a death like this, there was no peace without Oceanheart by her side. Oceanheart deserved to live outside this dome and Aiterra was going to make that happen.

The ground was a dusty crater when she awoke, ash clouding her lungs.

“Oceanheart?” Aiterra croaked, crawling out of the dirt. “Oceanheart!”

The artificial moon hung low in the metal sky, illuminating the trail of thick fur that was caught on bark and branches. She limped towards the trial, following it to the edge of the clearing. Touching that barrier meant death, a last ditch effort some made to leave. But that’s when she saw him. A pile of charred fur and torn wings. He’d tried to escape.

Aiterra sunk down, clutching onto remains.

And for the first time, she cried.

Alone.
