Mudflat, Part 2, Volume II
???

Continued from Glaw Part 2

“And instead,” Mudflat's voice rumbled with hatred, “you come waltzing into our lives. A weak old bat like yourself stopped me? Look at you, barely able to lift a single claw, or walk.” He stormed towards the Nocturne. “Now you're just a helpless—”

“What about the shadow you sent here?” Dewlap thought quickly, his question halting Mud in his tracks.

Now it was Mudflat's turn to look confused. “What shadow? I sent nothing here except Hadley, to bring Armin back to me, and that fool's not stealthy in the least.”

Dewlap kept backing up slowly, wincing with every step and hop as Mud remained still. “The shadow serpent that was after Alyss' and Pigeon's souls...you must have...”

“Didn't you hear a word I said?” growled Mud. “Why would I want the souls and memories of the dragons here when I wanted to forget this place?”

He was right, Dewlap hated to admit.

“But if you didn't send it here,” Dewlap started, his heart hammering, “then... who—”

Disembodied cackling suddenly echoed all around them. Dewlap and Mud looked all over, but saw nothing.

“Poor little wizard, his memory's a jumble...”

Then they both could see the coiling black figure twisting horribly down the main stairs. Four metal rings jingled a terrible tune as it sang.

shadow serpent

“...she'll have his soul soon, and his world will crumble!”

Mud still stood motionless, watching the serpentine shape with intense curiosity as it drew closer to both dragons.

Dewlap snapped his claws once, but a spark barely formed. Swallowing hard, he knew he only had one chance with this.

“Mudflat,” the Nocturne began carefully, “you can still come back with us, if you'll help me with this."

The big Guardian's eyes hardened when he looked down at him again. "Help you? You're nothing but a filthy, Shade-touched, soul-s—"

"I'm not a soul-searcher anymore!"

Dewlap's ringing voice stopped Mudflat again, and the big dragon looked on, bewildered, then anger took over once again. "That's impossible. No dragon can lose a power like that!"

"If I still were, you'd know," Dewlap promised, his eyes meeting Mud's.

Mudflat's own dark eyes were boring into the old Nocturne's...and he realized nothing was happening. But he scowled again. "This could be a trick," he spat.

"I'm not tricking you. But please...think of Coral and Alga.”

At the mention of his sisters' names, Mud hesitated, his eyes clouding and his gaze softening, but just slightly.

“It's a disguise,” the Guardian said at last, his focus clearing as he looked back to the twisting wraith.

Before Dewlap could ask what, Mudflat was already raising one arm, pointing a single claw out, and fired a bright blue ball. It shot forward, just flying past Dewlap and striking the serpent, completely enveloping it. It shrieked once before crumpling to the floor in a tangled heap, its wispy, shadowy form now showing—

The sight of golden scales and purple wings sent Dewlap staggering back. His head pounded as images flashed in his mind as memories were returning—

The gold-and-purple Spiral before him hadn't aged a single day since he last saw her, all those years ago.

good Flower

Flower?” Dewlap whispered as he limped towards her.

It was Marica's magic then, Dewlap seethed. That...witch must have used some sort of transformation spell that also erased Flower from Dewlap's memory, perhaps so he couldn't come to her rescue. Marica must have also sent her here to collect more souls...

...but how could she when she was trapped in Lumiere's void?

“What...what happened?” Flower's voice croaked. “Where am I?” she asked as Dewlap helped her to her feet. Her large green eyes then rounded with horror as she watched the four metal rings slip off of her long tail and fly up into the air, spinning towards the ceiling before vanishing in a flash.

“It's okay,” Dewlap told her. “You're safe now.”

“No...” Flower whispered hoarsely as she still looked up to where the rings disappeared to. “No, no...we have to leave, now!” she begged Dewlap.

“Flower, what's wrong? Marica's gone, she can't hurt you or anydrake else—”

Flower looked desperately into Dewlap's eyes. “They're going to set her free,” she said, her voice quaking in fear.

Now none of them had seen the mass of smoke forming and swirling above, or that it was growing, opening a hole...

“What's she blathering about?” asked Mud.

...until it was too late that Mudflat was struck in the chest by a bright yellow blast that stopped his heart. He gasped in pain and fought for breath, his dark eyes widening in terror as his own scales now began to peel away. He couldn't even scream in agony as his flesh melted away, his bones turning to ash, and only his armour remained.

And it was too late, Dewlap and Flower realized with sickening fright, that she was now standing right behind them.

Oh, fools, how they tumble,” sang the witch.

Marica.
