The Spiral smelled in deeply, taking in the scents of the fresh flowers he had put outside his home. It was an assortment of meadow flowers he had collected on the outskirts of the farm, sweet and plentiful, with a mixture of warm colors like yellows, creams, and reds. They would make some lovely arrangements for a house’s window, beckoning in the summer months.

*Buzz buzz* Oops! Best not to draw one’s nose too close to the flowers – there were already honeybees coming to savor his wares. Zummarah grinned and thought, maybe I should consider a honeybee hive. He could sell some honey and have them help make his garden more beautiful…

It was the start of a beautiful day! The Spiral was able to collect his flowers when the sun was just peeking over the horizon, creating a beautiful sunset to appreciate. It gave a spring in his step whenever he collected flowers in the wee hours of the morning, feeling rejuvenated by the first rays of the sun.

Dragons were stirring in the streets, searching for delectable food, unique wares, beautiful clothes, bright jewels, and tools, just to name a few. It was the main street in Crescent City, marked by glittery rocks that made up the cobbled street. Dragons imagined it to be like bringing the starlight to the center of the city. They aptly named the street too – Starlit Avenue. Artisans and merchants from the whole island came here to set up shop and sell their wares while dragons far and wide visited to purchase them.

Zummarah had set up his shop tent close to the mouth of the main street. Early to rise certainly has its benefits! However, he knew that many of his fellow shop keepers enjoyed having him greet the incoming dragons as the entered the main street. It may be the rich smells that drew them to his wares or the colorful array of flora that Zummarah meticulously arranged (so meticulously that whenever a dragon purchased his wares, the Spiral was inclined to rearrange the flora again into something beautiful).

The Spiral always imagined his work to be that of an artist – carefully choosing his “paints” from the world around him and using them to illustrate the “canvases” of his choice (a vase, his storefront, a garden, and so forth). It brought him great joy to have dragons appreciate his work as they walked past and even more joy when they decide to bring his work home with them.

Ah, and there was an art appreciator at this very time! A male Fae, with wings the colors of fresh leaves and scales of a bubbling brook, was gazing over the flowers, seeming to search for something in particular. “Can I help you?” Zummarah asked. The question startled the Fae for a moment, causing his frills to expand.

“I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to frighten you,” apologize the Spiral. “No, no, no,” the Fae’s head shook side to side, “I was afraid you were my mate, Poppy.” The Spiral smiled, “What a beautiful name.” The Fae gave a warm, loving smile, “Yes, to the most beautiful Spiral I have ever met. I just wanted to get her a bouquet of her favorite flowers.” His frills began to droop, “I’m just not good at this sort of thing...”

Zummarah felt a pang in his heart and immediately wanted to help the Fae. “Never fear, my friend! What are her favorite flowers?” The Fae’s eyes lit up, “Well, poppy is one of them of course!”

“Poppy for the Poppy it is!” and the Spiral plucked a few of the best poppy flowers to begin the bouquet, “Some gaillardia to match the red and compliment it with some bright yellow?” “Oooo, yes!” said the Fae, “She has lovely yellow eyes that make you feel like you’re drinking in drops of sunlight as you look into them.”

“Ah, then, let’s add a sunflower for the bouquet’s center,” and Zummarah neatly arranged the flowers so that the gaillardia surrounded the sunflower and the red poppies melded from the gaillardia into the bouquet’s boarder.

“Oh my! That bouquet….it’s perfect!!!” and when he was handed the bouquet, he held it so gingerly like a lover’s embrace. Tears welled up at the sides of his eyes, threatening to spill over, “I can’t thank you enough...would this be enough?” The Fae took a number of golden coins from the pouch tied to his side and held it out to the Spiral.

“That is more than enough!” exclaimed Zummarah, and he was unwilling to accept the coins into his hand, “You gave all the inspiration to make that – it was like your own love for Poppy drew those flowers together itself.”

“Please, I insist!” said the Fae, “You had made my feelings into something tangible that I know Poppy will love. It’s the least I can do for your skills.”

Zummarah hesitantly took the coins from the Fae, “Thank you so much.” “No, thank you so much,” smiled the Fae and he flew off to find his mate.

The Spiral stood by his wares for a moment, smiling at the thought of the Fae giving his mate the bouquet, both sets of eyes filled with warmth and love. Zummarah then thought of his own mate, Whalesong. It would be wonderful to make her something special to express his love for her. He hadn’t spent as much time with her recently due to his work getting busier with the season’s new flowers.

He shook his head, scolding himself. That needed to change! Determined to fix this error, Zummarah decided to set up a getaway with her for a day, at one of the island’s sandy coasts with a bouquet of flowers and her favorite food.

Smiling at his plan, he began to rearrange the flowers to sell. Yes, today was a beautiful day!
