PRONOUNS
she/her

past

It wasn't odd to see her on Sornieth. She embodied the cosmos, the guiding light in the darkness, but on the days she was bored and the stars were poor company, she would visit the dragons to walk amongst them. It wasn't a perfect disguise, and it took no time at all for her to be recognized by glimmers of the stars that she couldn't hide. The dragons would flock to her, mesmerized by the sliver glow that felt as familiar as a dream.

They gave to her.

Gifts, sacrifices, temple, holy days.

She walked the temples, accepting the fabrics and fruits and silver jewels. Priests and Priestesses kept her temples clean and her chambers warm. The dragons were kind to her with a desperation to win her favor. If she was displeased, if they insulted her, she could plunge their nights into darkness and let the monsters finish them.

The worship was, technically, unnecessary, but it was appreciated nonetheless.

She hardly noticed it fading away.

The Priests and Priestesses were aging without younger dragons to take their place. Dust gathered in the temples and cracks were left on the stones walls. The jewels and silks stopped being offered first, followed by the foods, and then there wasn't a single candle left for her or anyone else.

She walked into a temple, and she was alone.

present

She walks through the empty ruins.

It was beautiful once, full of life and laughter. Now the only life is the climbing vines breaking the foundations and the birds nesting in corners.

She knows there's nothing left for her, that the dragons have moved past the need for her, but she still visits the temples, lost in memories that feel warmer than the present. She takes her time, remembering when the alter was laid with sacrifices, the kitchen was overflowing with food for her and the others, her chambers had silks that slipped through her flingers rather than the moth-eaten holes that now dull the fabrics.

She still dresses in splendor, glittering jewels and clothes, but what a heartbreaking sight she must be now. The other deities are uncaring, never affected by the dragons. It's only her left grieving.

One more round and then it was time to leave, she tells herself. The sky needed her. The stars were bright, but the lack of the moon made the world dark. Any longer and she's be scolded for abandoning her post for nothing.

The alter, the kitchens, the courtyard–

There was a dragon in her chambers.

He was sleeping, tightly clutching the ragged silks in an attempt to keep warm. Dirt lined his scales and he was in need of a bath. Yue suspected that the dragon collapsed from exhaustion as soon as he saw the bed.

For a moment, she didn't know what to do. She couldn't just wake him up, could she? And the poor dragon looked like he went through a rough ordeal just to find a bed.

Blankets, she remembers. There are more blankets scattered through the temple. They weren't well-preserved, but they could provide some extra warmth if layered properly. She picks up as many as she could, leaves the ones that are more holes than cloth, surprised by the weight in her arms.

The dragon doesn't stir as she places them on him one by one to avoid bunching or drafts.

Soon enough, her arms are empty again, and she's unsure again. A fire, perhaps, but any wood she gathers would be damp from the snow. Food would be just as difficult to find.

She sits beside him. The stone is cold under her, but she doesn't dare to take any of the blankets from him. One moonless night won't throw everything out of balance.

He's very pretty under that dirt, she thinks vaguely. Ridiculous, she knows, as she can barely see him. But his scales are a deep blue that reminds her of the night. He'd probably be lovelier after a bath, though how that would happen in the middle of winter without a fire is beyond her. After he wakes, he'll be off to the nearest village for proper care, not the rags she has to offer.

The sky turns pink and her stars start to fade away when the dragon stirs. It's a small attempt to get more comfortable under the pile of blankets, but she still startles and moves closer. The sun is up when it happens again.

This time, the dragon opens his eyes, a lovely blue that widen at her.

What a sight she must be, she realizes. A glowing figure surrounded by ruin.

The dragon stares, terrified, yet there is something else.

Intrigue. Interest.

Moments pass as she stays still. The fear drains away, the curiosity does not.

What luck, she thinks, that this dragon found his way to her temple the night she came by. That he had someone to watch him as he slept.

"Hello," she smiles.

He smiles back. A wobbly and unsure thing, but a good sign.

"Hello."

future

He stays. There is little splendor left of her temples, but he stays with her.

During the days, she finds old jewels and new finery for him. In return, he finds fresh foods to share the between the two of them. During the nights, he stays behind, curled up under night sky and gazing up at her. She feels his eyes, steady as the stone under him. When she returns at daybreak, he has succumbed to sleep, surrounded by soft blankets and pillows.

In the spare moments between her return and his awakening, she mourns not being able to give him more. He is her only devotee, and though tradition dictates he give to her, she knows she would be wandering ruins without him.

He ages, as all dragons do. He has trouble walking, staying awake through the night, catching food. He needs more blankets to stay warm during the winters. She counts the days, grateful for every one. They pretend nothing is wrong.

She walks through the empty ruins.

It was beautiful once, full of life and laughter.

Now, there is nothing left for her.
