Biography

“I hate the moon—I am afraid of it—for when it shines on certain scenes familiar and loved it sometimes makes them unfamiliar and hideous... I saw that the garden had no end under that moon; for where by day the walls were, there stretched now only new vistas of trees and paths..."

GIBBOUS

Cosmic alignments play an important part in the rituals and travels of the worlds Beyond. Those new to esoterica should study the localized importance of lunar phases.

The full moon can reveal secrets and lost histories, but faint moonlight allows beings and things to pass as "normal" when they would normally be shunned as other. Unease felt during a waning gibbous moon is often a sign that something evil was preparing itself for the new moon, when most documented rituals are set.

The moon is heavily associated with Dreamland (both because the same moon seems to be present in both Sornieth and Dreamland, and also because the moon is synonymous to nighttime and sleep). The Cats of Ulthar have reluctantly admitted that they play on the moon at night; they have often met Nyarlathotep's minions who use the shadowed side of the moon as a trade outpost.

___Sansu the Moon-Touched, child of Hatheg-Kla___

This young obelisk belongs to the ancient line of the first Sansu, who, according to the Pnakotic Manuscripts, was the first to have scaled the mysterious mountain Hatheg-Kla. Old Sansu went in search of the gods back in the youth of the world, but when he came to the summit he found nought but ice and rocks bathed in cold moonlight. His futile discovery led to the belief that the Great Ones had yet to visit Sornieth, so Sansu and his kin founded the village of Hatheg in the shadow of the mountain, and waited for the day when one of their ancestors would hear the call of divine beings and attempt the climb once more.

Many generations passed until eventually the crest of Hatheg-Kla became clouded, and strange music could sometimes be heard filtering down on May Eve and All Hallows Night. It was then the townsfolk knew that the gods had arrived, and they waited earnestly for one of their own to be granted permission to ascend the mountain to watch the nameless deities dance and share in their spiritual knowledge.

Young Sansu - her name a custom for children hatched with the ethereal pale eyes of their distant progenitor - heard celestial voices late one May Eve when she was out picking night lillies. For a second, the familiar vista before her became strange and unearthly in the moonlight, and the disembodied noises from above echoed all around her. Frightened, the obelisk went to the elders to tell them that the Great Ones had awakened. This news caused much excited discussion, and it was decided that Sansu would be the one to scale Hatheg-Kla and seek the wisdom of those who dwelt at its peak.

But the adolescent obelisk was frightened, and could not forget the tale of Barzai the Wise, an outsider who had come to the village a century before to explore Hatheg-Kla in the hopes of meeting its mystical denizens. The natives advised him against the journey, fearing the gods would frown upon mortals who disturbed them without invitation. The zealous imperial did not heed their warnings, and he and his young disciple began the climb, only for Barzai to disappear and never be seen or heard from again. Atal, the pupil, returned alone, and refused to speak of what had happened.

Currently, preparations are continuing to be made for Sansu's pilgrimage, and the obelisk feverishly researches all she can on the history of Hatheg-Kla, from ancient scrolls to old wives tales, anything that might help her on her journey. Consumed with foreboding, Sansu has decided to seek out the one dragon who may have some advice - Atal, the now aged priest who resides in the Temple of Ulthar. Atal has spoken to no-one about the disappearance of Barzai, but Sansu travels to Ulthar in her ceremonial finery to plead for his insight before she embarks on her ascent of the mountain.
