Biography

kiXgHWD.png Born in the bubbling wastelands, or manufactured by nefarious plague doctors - how Viridae came into being is unknown, but her arrival brought death, chaos, and disruption on a level previously unseen by Sornieth. The virulent pathogen that she unleashed affected millions worldwide, and in the beginning, dragon and beastclan alike fought viciously in panic to hoard medicine and supplies in vain attempts to protect themselves. The sick were left to rot, and the elderly were abandoned to fend for themselves as the disease rampaged through the lands. Those lucky enough to remain healthy - or as close to healthy as possible - became consumed by panic and despair, in what became known as The Great Misery, and the mandatory isolation laws that were hastily decreed had long-lasting mental and physical tolls to rival that of the virus itself.

Fortunately, the communities who had reacted quickly to the crisis were able to maintain a semblance of normality, and with rationing and good hygiene practices they remained relatively safe. Contact was finally made between these remote clans, and an agreement made to pool resources and work together to defeat Viridae, and perhaps most importantly: discover where she came from, and why. It was clear that hoping for herd immunity to develop naturally was not going to work (due to the fact that there was nothing natural about the virus to begin with) and to make matters more complicated, it was proven that Viridae could mutate new strains of the original infection, making it near impossible to fully eradicate. So scientists established top secret laboratories and hurriedly began to test alternate treatments and vaccines, hoping to find a way to turn the tide.

Two main schools of thought emerged from the countless hours of discussion and theorising. The first was that Viridae was a new lifeform that had evolved in the festering cauldron of the Wyrmwound. After all, it had long been foretold by oracles of the Plaguebringer that after marinating in eons of filth and sickness, something sentient would finally be born from it. Followers of this prophecy rejoiced at the coming of Viridae, claiming her to be The Reaper, the one who would cover all of Sornieth in disease, leaving only Plaguelings to rule. But when the believers also began to fall ill, they realised that their herald did not consider them exempt, and that all life was meaningless to her.

The second (and more controversial) suggestion was that Viridae had been created as a biological weapon, and that the infection rate had grown out of hand and could no longer be controlled by those who had been experimenting on her. While it was easy to scoff at those who believed this "conspiracy theory", more and more evidence continues to emerge that proves there is more truth to this story than originally thought. Cover-ups and false data hamper the on-going investigations, but the facts will eventually be disclosed, and a global committee has been formed to review the findings.

As scientists and doctors work around the clock to combat the virus, others find their own way of dealing with the fallout. Swords are sharpened, and calls for retribution have become a warcry to those who have lost loved ones, businesses, and their very freedom. Never before in Sornieth's history have dragons been told by their leaders that they may not leave their own dens or touch their loved ones, and be threatened with fines or gaol if they do so. These events can't be forgotten, and angry masses demand accountability.

For now, all functioning communities continue to work together to counteract the threat of Viridae, but if and when the disaster is abated, there will be unavoidable consequences that will affect generations of the entire world, and many more questions will need to be answered.
