The name 'Farohildis' is a variant of the Germanic name Pharaildis, which is derived from the elements fara (journey) and hild (battle).

Farohildis' surname, Ogiveshide, refers to the banded pattern of her coat. Ogives refer broadly to roundly tapered ends of a two-dimensional or three-dimensional object. However, in the context of glaciers, the term refers to alternating bands of light and dark ice.
