NOX - Healer

Bottled Embers Redblood Sapper Zeeba Horn

Thank the gods for Nox's work, and you will surely find yourself blacklisted from his services. It's a matter of principle, you see; he does not bend over backwards to make sense of the draconic body for his hard work to be dismissed as divine will. No spirit or deity has blessed his claws, and he would thank you to remember that before requesting his help.

And if you don't? Well, trust your recovery to the gods. He will have no more to do with it, if you have so much faith.

He wasn't always so blunt about his beliefs. For a time, he tolerated a sense of magic and divinity. It was simply the way of things, a fact of the world. His clan swore allegiance to higher beings, and they kept peace over the matter. If it wasn't a god's will to do battle or kindle conflict, then they simply did not engage.

Of course, Nox also thought little of this when he was young. He was too busy following the healers around, pestering them for their knowledge, begging for their expertise. The other dragons in his clutch reacted with disgust to anatomical matters, put off by the slightest wounds or bodily functions. What fueled Nox's curiosity turned so many other dragons away, and it did not take him long to become the healers' favorite apprentice.

He was sharp, they all agreed. Quick-witted and studious, always with his nose in a book or a pot of herbs. Anything he could do to expand his knowledge, he did without question, and before long, he could be trusted to see to minor injuries without supervision. A little scrape from skimming too close to a bramble thicket was no life-threatening matter, nor was the slice of a claw, slipped while dicing zeeba meat for stew, but he healed those with his own herbs, his own hands.

How many dragons could do that? Not many. The pride he took in his work was all-consuming from then on. Every effort had to be perfect, every concoction and poultice beyond reproach. And if it wasn't, he labored away until it was, consulting every font of knowledge he could dream of until new solutions presented themselves.

He learned to break bones so he could heal them. He learned to cut open organs so he could save them. He poured his heart and soul into his work, bringing the natural world into concert with alchemical advances, until even his teachers came to him for advice rather than the other way around.

What a strange power to have, to know the world so well that he can dole out life and death on a whim. He knows it now for its true value as a gift, but then? He fell prey to his clan's view of it as a curse.

A little meddling in the natural order is a healer's duty, sure, but the more Nox pushed at the limits of his knowledge, the more tradition pushed back. Some illnesses were believed to be beyond help, solely in the realm of the gods' will. He saw catastrophic injuries deemed to be of the same nature. And where his experiments could have succeeded, where the right surgery might have changed everything, the clan stood firm behind their holy figures.

Dragons died because the gods failed. No, because their fellows failed, because there are no gods. If there were, surely Nox would not have turned to traveling medicine. A stable laboratory is far better for experiments, what with the reduced variables to adjust for.

But he left his clan behind because they were complacent in their limits. They lacked the courage to push forward, even when lives were on the line. Certainly none of them were brave enough to produce new remedies and self-test them, as Nox so often did. And while it is true he paid the price on more than one occasion, most notably with the alchemical incident that disfigured his face down to bone, he also made advances that had not been seen in an age.

The clan said his chemical burns and his other failings were the will of the gods, a punishment for his curiosity stepping too far out of bounds.

Nox said they could fare just fine without him, if their gods were so important.

Now, he travels Sornieth, making house calls for cases big and small. The more complex maladies excite him most, but he will stop where he is asked, so long as no gods are invoked, and he meets no scorn for his appearance. After all, the power of a healer lies not in how they look or who they worship, but what they know and the lengths they are willing to go to in the name of good health.

He has no idea how his former clan is faring, and feels no need to find out. There is still more knowledge awaiting him in Sornieth, and he will not know rest until he finds it all.
