Biography
Kaal and Ahkrin are a pair of former Keepers whose bastion was weakened by an epidemic, had their requests for aid go unanswered, and ultimately fell to the shade creatures imprisoned staging a revolt. Kaal took the few surviving wardens and fled north to the Ashfall Wastes, between feeling abandoned by the orders and blaming herself for whatever misstep might have caused it. Among these was her partner, Ahkrin, who had long struggled with his place in the orders for being arcane-aligned in a society dominated by isolationism and xenophobia
Suleyk, Feim, Odthur, and Alok are their children, born after the wardens accepted the offer of shared territory from a fledgling clan. While Ahkrin was fairly quickly able to adapt to the new environment and call it home (including developing a relationship with the leader of the clan), Kaal found it difficult to shed the militaristic culture she grew up with, resulting in painfully high expectations for her hatchlings and, inevitably, conflict both within their family, their community, and the clan at large when those lofty bars couldn't be reached.
Suleyk has tried all her life to be a model gaoler, her mother's perfect Seeker- a peerless hunter able to outsmart, outrun, outlast any threat. Being the favorite is not without its downsides; others find her single-minded devotion off-putting, and she isn't immune to feeling the strain of self-reliance, especially after one of her latest hunts had her return home with a shade parasite burrowing in the back of her mind...
Feim, meanwhile, is Suleyk's direct opposite: she chafed under the restrictions Kaal imposed, to the point she took any and every opportunity to push back against her authority and embrace, perhaps to excess, the relative culture of freedom found outside the orders. She trusts her instincts and impulses wholeheartedly and relishes pushing metaphorical buttons just to see what their consequences are. As might be noticed, one of these buttons involved a period spent eloping into the Scarred Wasteland, returning home with twice as many self-satisfied grins as she left with. She'll never admit it- especially not to her mother- but she's starting to wonder if, perhaps, her impulses are starting to lead her down a path she doesn't truly want or understand, or if one day she'll encounter an obstacle she can't simply dance around on her own.
While Kaal was busy trying to wrangle the elder daughters, Odthur sort of... fell through the cracks, in a way that suited her curiosity about the wider world. She traveled as she pleased throughout the nearby towns, picking up the beginnings of new skills and interests everywhere she went. None captured her eye or heart quite so fully as meeting the Shardflanks, a clan of gaolers roaming Sornieth with ideals of cooperation, compassion, and creativity- certainly a far cry from the rigid, minimalist independence her mother demanded. She's still with the Shardflanks to this day, alongside her partner, Dir, and twin sons Klo and Krah
And Alok... to be honest I haven't gotten much inspiration for him yet. Alok is happy to be here. He's the baby of the family, probably softer and shyer than his sisters. Ahkrin fussed over him as a hatchling. Maybe he hasn't quite found his niche yet. He's toyed with developing his skills in music, with becoming a gardener, a familiar handler, a courier, even with following in Odthur's path to leave the clan, try his luck in a larger city. What if his sisters are engaged in all this conflict over generational trauma and he's just, like, off in the Starfall Isles working the morning shift at a rail-side diner...
