Biography
In darkened fields it watches, waits
Tills the rich black soil
Mutters its secrets
Its hopes
Its dreams
To rows of growing toil
Maw opens and its voice oozes
Down to the earth beneath
Heavy claws
Thud and
Grind as
It tends to every leaf
"Nothing shall grow here
For the ground is cursed!"
So say those
Who pass
And judge
As each tender sprout is nursed
Judgement means nothing
To one such as this
Who knows about
The ground
The air
The sun's burn with each kiss
Come the harvest it goes again
To reap the fruit of its labor
Gently it plucks
Each fruit
Each grain
Each gift of mother nature
Death comes then to take a share
Scythe cuts through hollow stalks
Rotten stems tumble
To the earth
A graveyard
Devoid of life or thoughts
But come the spring it comes again
And sews its hearty seeds
And tends the gardens
The flowers
The trees
And ask which each one needs
For it is Life and Death in one
The sewer and the reaper
Its jaw calls growth
Claws death
Decay
Both wise man and the seeker
So mind yourself in gardens, child
And be quiet in the fields
For there it lurks
And tends
And waits
To give its plants a meal.
- it/its
- groundskeeper
- oversees the massive fields of sunflowers and sorghum that surround the estate
- refers to itself in the third person
- has a ravenous appetite
- the others avoid it because of its strangely intimidating mannerisms, but it serves Spirit faithfully
- a very gentle, if not troubled, soul
- definitely hiding something
