“Peace is a journey of a thousand miles and it must be taken one step at a time.”

The insistent, repetitive caress of water pulled Zuma from her slumber. Groggily rubbing the sand from her eyes, she squinted and grumbled impatiently as she waited for her eyes to adjust to the assertive afternoon sunshine. Gulls cried forlornly above her as the Skydancer stumbled to her feet, her arm raised in a feeble attempt to protect her fresh eyes from the sun, and began making her way to a ramshackle domicile away from the surf.

Muttered curses escaped her as she struggled through the soft sand and finally to the threshold of her humble abode. The door adamantly protested her attempt to enter. It creaked and groaned under the pressure, but would not budge. Not to be defeated by a simple driftwood door, Zuma mustered a bit more strength (and wits) to lift the door slightly and shove it forward. With an ear-splitting shriek to rival the gulls, the door gave and allowed the Skydancer into the blissful darkness within.

She blinked rapidly as her eyes were forced to adjust again. Her teeth bared in a silent snarl, Zuma made her way through her collection of found treasures in search of a cup. Or anything that could work as a cup. ”Mornings suck.” she croaked as her claws found the chipped edge of a bowl. Navigating through the haphazard hoard once more, she made her way to her weathered table and poured herself a drink. The Skydancer grimaced as she gulped down the questionable liquid, realizing just how far she was willing to stretch the definition of ‘potable’ water.

With her morning (or perhaps one should call it ‘waking’) ritual complete, Zuma cast a glance at her unkempt surroundings. ”Mother would be so proud of me...” She grunted at her own quip, a smirk cracking her normally surly countenance. Steeling her resolve, she began the tedious task of sorting through the chaos – she’d let it fester long enough. Thankful she had the forethought (laziness, really) to leave her door open, the Skydancer began tossing the most useless items outside and piling the items she did care about against the far wall.

Zuma was tired of the clutter, tired of sleeping too late and waking up to the sun way past its zenith. She used to be a morning dragon… at some point. The beach was supposed to be her sanctuary, but as with most things in her life, it had begun to spiral into a pit of despair. Moving out here, past the spindly reaches of her overbearing mother, had been her ‘new start’ to life. Despite her initial excitement, the isolation had proved to become a detriment. Away from the structure and demands of city living, Zuma had regressed to her base nature.

But who said old dogs can’t learn new tricks?

”New year, new me.” She repeated the mantra (even though it was July) as she continued to purge the confines of her driftwood home. At one point, staring at a particularly mangled idol she had found just past the reaches of the ocean months ago, Zuma felt her resolve weakening. It was cute (not really), she could keep it. She ran her fingers over its cracked façade, delicately tracing the edges of the broken horns, before her gaze wandered back to the bucket of ‘drinking’ water on her table. Yea. No. Her courage returned swiftly as she remembered the caustic taste of her drink. The idol quickly joined the growing pile of rejects outside her door.

Working methodically, Zuma cleared nearly half of her home before the sun dipped below the horizon. Pleased with her progress, she pulled her stool (that she totally forgot she had) out onto the sand and watched the sunset. Though her body was exhausted, her mind felt refreshed and clear for the first time in months. Today had been a small step in the right direction.

After all, no one ever got to the top of the mountain in one jump.
