He wanders the outskirts, a steady solitary march. Much of his time is spent waiting: for the short nights of summer to grow ever longer, for the breezes to shift from warm to brisk cold, for the endless turn of days to finally turn in his favor. Izhrak’s strength is an ephemeral thing, and he savors the vigor that arrives with the onset of winter. He tests it with the labor of the Autumn Court’s harvest. While he is not quite welcome there - not truly of their court - he is familiar enough that the busy autumn fey leave him to toil alongside them freely. If he doesn’t find a place there, the mortal world offers harvests aplenty. More than one folk tale describes a quiet worker who arrives towards the end of the season, working harder and longer than any normal man - which is a blessing, since the frost follows soon after him. The great irony of his existence: when his power finally peaks, frost blanketing the land, the world grows still. Quiet, anticipating the hard-earned rest of the coming winter - and then there is him, restless with the abundance of his energy and with nowhere to direct it. In his better years he finds revelers celebrating the end of their harvest, throwing himself and all his fervor into their jubilee. In worse years, his frenzy turns to destruction - pity to any crops left in the fields, for none survive in his wake. |
