Some hatchlings are born with truly fascinating abilities. Although Psyche doesn't remember his original name or form, or anything else about his old life, he does remember that he was once one of these hatchlings. The dragons of the water flight are known to be masters of scrywork, so perhaps it was a blessing when a child was hatched who could enter the dreams of others. He certainly considered it a blessing, and he practiced as often as he could. He learned the deepest, darkest secrets of his clanmates, tested how far another dragon could be sleeping away from him to enter their mind, even attempted to hitch a ride in an awakened dragon's subconscious sometimes. Oh, what fun he had, truly anything could happen within a dream. But of course, every good dream must end eventually. Normally that results in waking up, but quite the opposite was true for him. One night, (or day, it could have been,) he found he could no longer find his way back to his own body. He was just a floating soul, cursed to hop between the dreams of others. And so he did. He's not sure how long it's been, it took him an alarmingly short amount of time to forget his original name, but honestly, he thinks Psyche fits him better anyway. It's hard to tell what goes on in the real world through the scrambled lens of others' dreams, even though they are his domain now that he is quite literally a dream dragon. Psyche doesn't remember all those secrets he uncovered from the minds of his clanmates, but he does remember the look in their eyes when he revealed that they weren't safe in their own minds anymore. The remorse will never leave him. It's difficult to repent for your wrongdoings when you're confined to the sleeping minds of others, but Psyche has found a way. Within the realm of dreams, he can see beneath the layers of standards and social expectations. He can see the forms these dragons may need to take to fully and properly be themselves, to make them feel complete. Although he can't help these dragons achieve this in the physical realm, he can show them the truth about their identities. Psyche's work is fulfilling, and the dreamscapes of others never fail to amaze him. He seldom sees the same thing twice, and hearing that a dragon he's met has transformed into their true self always brings a proud smile to his face. Nevertheless, a part of him still hopes that someday he'll encounter a long-dormant obelisk body, left in stoneshape as it eagerly awaits the return of its wayward soul. |
