The Awoken

Many say that Burning Goblins are the eyes of the Flamecaller, giving her a view of Sorneith from where she rested. The goblins are well known for this, but they are not alone in their service.

Lesser known are The Awoken. Originating from a single pair of unknown origin, The Awoken hatch in the chaos and heat of a volcanic eruption, emerging as lava in the shape of a Coatl. Each Awoken feels a great connection to their homeland and deity, though the connection between an Awoken and Flamecaller herself varies with each individual. Some work as her prophets, others are her eyes as much as the goblins are. However, some may have very little actual connection to Flamecaller, simply portraying themselves as sub-deities despite lacking any true power.

The Awoken eggs are laid in the calderas of active volcanoes, only hatching when the volcano erupts. Their very lives are tied to lava; hatchlings need to bathe in it for at least five days to survive and adults need to bathe in it annually to continue living. The Awoken can heal almost any injuries inflicted on them by bathing in lava, including regrowing lost limbs, if they manage to reach a lava pool quickly enough. Adult Awoken will slowly shrink due to losing lava mass between baths, and the amount of time spent bathing in lava dictates the individual’s size once they choose to emerge from the molten rock.

This reliance on lava makes standing near one nearly unbearable for an ill-equipped or unprepared dragon as Awoken individuals radiate constant heat. Additionally, it makes them incredibly vulnerable to water and cold temperatures; exposure to one or the other for a long enough period of time could kill an Awoken.

Despite this weakness, most Awoken individuals continue to view themselves as sub-deities and demand others treat them as such, struggling to understand when others refuse to give them the respect they believe they deserve.
