Maeryn is pretty. Maeryn does not need to be anything more than pretty, and he is okay with this. The duty of a living jewelry piece is to make their wearer look nice, to be flashy and fabulous and little else.

Others speak, others mingle. Norn would be quite content to let him go about with other dragons, talking and fraternizing and whatever else living jewels do when they are not adorning their owners, but Maeryn cares not for such things. He doesn't want to mingle. He doesn't want to interact with others. He hardly speaks even to Norn, who wears him; he simply shifts in whatever way she asks him to in order to make the sunlight gleaming on his gilded scales reflect directly into her brother's eyes in yet one more petty attempt to annoy him.

Other living jewels find him strange, or find her cruel. They assume she will not let him socialize, will not let him be with others of his own kind, but the choice is his alone.

Arngrim tried once, futilely, to befriend him after Norn returned to Reginn's clan with Maeryn perched upon her head, a testament to her infantile need to be more impressive than her brother. The bejeweled fae was thwarted, as many before her, by his refusal to accept her benevolent advances. He was certain she was perfectly nice, and would be an excellent friend to anyone who desired friendship... but he did not.

Norn compensates him well for what is almost the perfect job. He wants for nothing except the quiet at the end of the day, and were he ever to ask she would certainly provide far more than she already does in return for the natural luster of his scales and fur. She spends fortunes on expensive scrubs and soaps for his personal use, and polishes to keep him looking his best. All he must do is sit on her head or cling to her neck, perhaps her tail so that every lash of it might catch the sun in a dazzling display or distraction.

And when his mistress has no further need of him he retreats alone to his bedchambers and breathes a sigh of relief at the emptiness, at the silence, at the blessed loneliness of having no other bodies to listen to but his own.
