You had to be a criminal to know one. That’s what Calisto had learned in his years as one of Sornieth’s most successful bounty hunters. Breaking the laws of dragonkind was what had led him here, hot on the trail of one of the Starfall Isle’s most notorious criminal masterminds. The witty thief had stolen hundreds of precious manuscripts and ancient tomes from the Tourmaline Archives, enraging librarians and Arcane dragons alike. They had hired Calisto to track down the thief and bring him to justice, offering a hefty sum in reward. Calisto gladly accepted.
In his early years, Calisto himself was a skilled thief, using the small fraction of his mother’s magic that lived in his veins to disappear whenever he was in danger of being caught. Perhaps it was his father’s influence, or perhaps it was Calisto’s own sense of morality, but eventually he grew weary of this dishonest lifestyle. His accumulated wealth weighed on his conscience until inevitably, he gave it up, donating everything he owned to a nearby orphanage and starting anew. This time, his pursuit was justice instead of profit, and this time, his conscience did not rebel against him. Having been a thief himself, Calisto knew how to catch those criminals still at large, bringing them in to the local authorities who would dispense their own justice. He had a special knack for determining whether someone was lying or not, and therefore was adept at differentiating the guilty from the innocent. Like all the others he had caught over the years, this book thief would not escape him. |
