Free Internet Learning Resources
I love, love, love to learn because I was always a teachers' pet and luckily for me, there are tons of materials online to guide and supplement my learning. I wanted to collate some of the sources I've found to organize myself and help point other users in the right direction. The clan keeper of knowledge, Lehara, has aided me in my efforts to compile these resources and will be storing them in her biography for the time being. This is definitely the most Light-typical thing I have ever done in my short tenure on this site...
General Sites & Online Databases
edX (MOOC)
Take free college level courses online- these are also known as massive online open courseware. To receive credit or certification, you must pay, but for casual learning is completely free. Some courses may require the purchase of additional resources and quality will differ depending on the program.
Khan Academy
A free website covering a variety of topics ranging from school math courses to test preparation. Best used for supplementing learning done in school or reviewing old topics.
Google Books
There are a variety of books out of the public domain available on Google Books. The search function can be a bit unwieldy and makes browsing for free books a chore. I prefer Project MUSE and Project Gutenberg to Google Books, but thought I should list the alternative.
PBS (Public Broadcasting Service)
Hours upon hours of videos available through the donor-funded PBS. Regional restrictions will come into play here.
Project Gutenberg
Originally named for the bible printing project, the current iteration of Project Gutenberg houses over 60,000 ebooks available to read for free. The ebooks are all out of the public domain, so it is completely legal to read off the site. As a result, most of the books are very old. You can read classics such as Dracula, War and Peace, and lesser known fiction and nonfiction titles.
Project MUSE
Like Project Gutenberg, Project MUSE is an open access digital library. Project MUSE focuses specifically on publications in the realm of social sciences and the humanities. The content on this site will be more recent than what can be found on the Gutenberg site because Project MUSE derives its content from university and thinktank publications.
Libby
An online library app that allows readers to check out ebooks with only their library card! Libby is a wonderful way to read more popular books that may not be on other digital archives. The selection available varies by what libraries you have access to. I'm not sure if countries other than the United States use Libby, but it's definitely worth investigating.
Library of Congress
Provides thousands of primary source documents across the era of American history. A bit tricky to navigate, but an invaluable resource for anyone looking to seriously research American history. I'll also be linking this under the history section.
United Nations Digital Library
Explore more primary source documents such as votes, speeches and conference proceedings. The library also includes public domain supplemental materials. I will also be linking this under the history section because the UN is both manufactured by history and a history manufacturer.
