FOCUS ON THE HUNT

Now is not the time for recollections. The creature he was in the waking world is not the thing he became when he slipped through dreaming into his realm.

You remember its scent. Acrid as candle-smoke, all the colors of nausea shining like an oilslick on his wings and fur if you looked too close and too long. This is the trail you follow across the desert, through the forest down a moss-wet path, through the hole in the cobblestone wall. Crumbling stone and cracking windows. Beyond is a rain bloated door you push open with the butt of your harpoon.

It is not sitting at a seat when you step cautiously beyond the threshold. The massive oak table is still laid for tea. Walk toward it and then, very carefully, into your memory of it. Until the pristine white tablecloth is pulled sharply to one side and a teapot lies smashed on the floor. Until the sugar bowl is leaking its contents into the grain of the wood. This, if nothing else, will bring it to you.
