If she squinted against the blinding sun, she could just make out the smallest Southern Mountains on the horizon. If they weren't there, it would be all too easy to lose your way in the Golden Sea, the arid flatlands that make up most of the Western half of the Light Flight. For a thousand miles in every direction, it was only golden grain, relentless heat, and droning cicadas. The people of the Light Flight are known to be scrupulous and severe, devoted as they are to truth, wisdom, and the sharing of knowledge, but not so the Western half. There were no kingdoms out here to unify things, only caravan trains and farm communities. Contact with the outside world went with the Summer. Westerners were considered ignorant, red-necked yokels who used superstition as a means to excuse heresy. Outsiders didn't like them, and they disliked them right back. Not Saturn, though. To her family's dismay, she's obsessed with the outside world
