Biography
The Fairy: Witch of the Autumn Forest
Leafsong is an Autumn Fairy, part of an elusive group whose deadly magic is carefully guarded. She lived in the forest of her people, a place that can only be reached when the borders between worlds are thin. She met Ran and Tarnse some time after they started travelling as a duo. She perched in a tree and watched them pass, following them through the woods by way of the treetops. She wasn’t quite sure what to make of them; intruders were rare in her woods, and most who passed through did so in fear. The woods were eternally caught between summer and winter, a land marked by slow decay, and yet the two seemed unfazed.
Leafsong crept among the ever-dying leaves without even a whisper of sound, and yet a pair of sharp eyes locked onto her. Tarnse’s piercing gaze instilled something like fear in her, and he coolly interrogated her for following them. Shocked at his arrogance, and his ability to see through her disguises, she blurted out that it was rare for outsiders to enter her woods. Only upon speaking aloud did she realize the great gap between their two species; to Ran and Tarnse, her voice sounded like the howling wind and the soft chime of a bell in a soft breeze.
Though she could not communicate with them verbally, Leafsong decided that she would follow them, at least to the edge of her realm. For days they walked together, Ran and Tarnse picking their way through the underbrush and Leafsong nimbly leaping from branch to branch. She had never met an outsider who could use magic, and her fascination with Tarnse’s abilities drew her onwards. Tarnse, in turn, recognized the signs of a powerful mage. Though he did not know her people’s specific abilities, an aura of power hung around Leafsong like a cloud. He and Ran spoke to Leafsong as they walked, telling her stories of the land from which they came, and she managed to reply through simple hand gestures. Though they could not learn much about her, they understood that she intended to follow them.
Once they reached the edge of the woods, they waved at Leafsong and thanked her for her guidance through the forest. Leafsong turned to leave, but paused. These two were interesting, and walked with her unafraid. She knew that should she wish to return, she need only find a gap between worlds and slip through to return home. Curiosity burned in her like a flame, and she longed to see the world of which the two travellers had spoken. She turned her back on the woods and left with them.
They walked from the Autumn Woods straight into the Starwood Strand, and continued on from there. Ran and Tarnse explained that they were wanderers, who lived nomadically and made their living by taking what they needed wherever they could find it, whether that meant living off the land or stealing from other travellers. Fairies are notoriously fickle, and Leafsong was not the type to settle in one place. She agreed to stay with them and travel across Sornieth, seeking knowledge and new magic. Her power was a boon to the small group; the Autumn Fairies originate from a realm between life and death, and Leafsong’s presence can cause the surrounding life to shrivel and die.
Leafsong is a gifted shapeshifter, easily switching between the shape of a fairy and that of a dragon. Her wings remain delicate and insectoid, but she managed to mimic the form of a skydancer in body. Though small for a skydancer, she passes well enough that none have questioned her. She is flighty and curious, and tends to wander off alone on a whim. Though she returns to Ran and Tarnse and the clan they have built, she often leaves in the night to explore alone.
