Biography
A N U K H ROYAL GUARD |
╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
"Then go home." ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯
H I S T O R Y
Though Anukh was born a guardian, he never knew the trials of the search. No—instead, he was born into the household of his charge, bred to serve a great clan located at the heart of the Shifting Expanse. His charge, heiress of the clan, took him with her everywhere, and he would be her guard and her companion for many years, loving her so devoutly that in his mind, she could do no wrong. However, it was not to last. Soon after the clan matriarch passed away, the heir, Laina, took her place upon the throne, and for a time, she did as her predecessors did, doing everything in her power to guide and protect her clan. But as time went on she became increasingly discontent--and in her discontent, she became heartless, inflicting terrible suffering upon the lives of her subjects simply to pass the time. Though Anukh loved her more than anything he had ever known, he knew he could not stand by and do nothing, and implored her to change her ways. Instead, she made him an accomplice to her savagery, manipulating their bond to force him to commit unspeakable acts against his will. Each day, the things she asked of him grew more and more vile, until finally, she told him to murder their own children. He could do nothing to refuse. Broken by Laina's cruelty and his place in it, Anukh resolved to stop her by any means necessary. She was too far gone for him to save her now, so he knew that meant she had to die--but he could hardly raise his voice against her, let alone his claws. And so, desperate but powerless, Anukh turned to the Stormcatcher for help, praying to be relieved of his devotion to his charge. In a strange moment of charity, the Stormcatcher agreed—but the Tidelord, original maker of Anukh’s form, intervened, stating that a guardian could not change their true nature without paying a terrible price. And so, it was decided that for the crime of betraying his charge, the Tidelord would afflict Anukh with a curse: from then on, he would only be loved by those who he was destined to kill. Returned to the land a ridgeback, Anukh went to the quarters of his sleeping charge, where the two of them had spent countless nights together in peace—and murdered her. He did not stay to see the aftermath of his actions—instead he escaped into the wilderness, content to wander alone for the rest of his days so that he would not provoke the manifestation of the curse. However, after many years of solitude, he would come across two others, first Abalone and then Crag, both as alone in the Shifting Expanse as he was. Because of Abalone's irritability and Crag's aloofness, Anukh convinced himself that no matter how close they got, neither of them could ever love him, and so the three of them forged a new clan together. They remained peacefully amongst themselves for a time, until one day they were attacked by a larger clan and Anukh's leg was crippled in the aftermath. Furious, but knowing she could do nothing with only two other dragons at her side, Crag began to rapidly expand their numbers, both recruiting individual dragons and taking over smaller clans until there was enough of them to return the favor. However, revenge turned out not to be enough. Renaming their clan to Clan Athema, Crag declared that all dragons that did not stand with them would become their enemies--and Clan Athema's enemies would be slaughtered with extreme prejudice. Anukh has tried his best to pretend that Crag is acting for the benefit of all of them-- --but somehow, he cannot help but think that he has done this all before.
P E R S O N A L I T Y
Anukh is calm and reserved, though he will occasionally demonstrate a rather wry sense of humor around those he is comfortable with. For many years, he put on a cool facade in order to keep others from taking a liking to him, but over time he has become too weary and lonely to keep others at arms length, even though he knows full well what the consequences of that might be. Nevertheless, old habits die hard, and his still comes off as rather distant and intimidating upon first meeting him. Though no longer a guardian, he is still deeply loyal by nature and has a tendency to go above and beyond the call of duty to make those he cares about happy. Even with respect to complete strangers, he has a strong altruistic streak, and his kind nature has gotten him hurt more than once. On the flipside, he hates resorting to violence, and will go to obscene lengths to avoid using it--he does not like to admit that this is because when he is forced to use violence, it comes a bit too easily for his tastes. At the moment he is content, and he is glad to be amongst other dragons again. However, he knows it is only a matter of time before his present happiness triggers his curse. Between that and Crag's increasingly volatile behavior, it is apparent to him that only tragedy awaits him in the future. But at this point, he is resigned to cross that bridge when he comes to it. |
