Name meaning: Phœnine
From the Greek φοῖνιξ , " red ".
( Chemistry ) Material coloring derived from wood of copaifera langsdorffii .
[…] Time only in the name of the bird which is always reborn from its ashes, and in that of the red dye called phoenine . - (Laurence Talbot, Unpublished Profane History: The Paladins of the Western World , Cercle français du livre et des arts, 1965)
This word is very rare, and it is not clear which of the two spellings is correct, or even whether one should be preferred over the other. The only example of employment found (apart from an encyclopedic dictionary) writes it without ligature.
