Lacesso hatched alone, and wandered alone, in the Scarred Wastelands which he would come to fervently love, seeking to understand the land and its brutal denizens. He learned of the goddess Plaguebringer who challenged death and respected its boundaries, who devised and designed with unimaginable creativity, who revered life and reveled in its absence. His quiet affection grew and crystallized into eternal devotion to the ragged beauty of the Contagion, the distant hollow echoes that rippled through the Boneyard, and all of the scarred survivors who wrested a living upon this wretched, thriving land. During adolescence, as a Guardian coming of age, he knew to expect the calling of his Search. But no disquieting tug to find ever came. He remained content to wander, to enjoy the land, to think, fight, speak with, learn from, and contest the ideas of the many dragons he'd met over the course of his travels. Briefly he thought to be worried that he was on no Search, that he had no Charge, no Clan, no desire to be loved or even well-liked, but it passed from his thoughts on the basis that they caused him no obstacle. He then met Khucho, a mighty and jubilant bacchant of war and disease. Like him, she was born of the Plaguelands and wandered them joyously. Unlike him, she lived by no word, instead by her teeth and claws and the strength of her sinew and bone. She spoke of herself and her life simply, her ferocity laying quietly stark and open. She celebrated as she hunted and fought, the world an eternal cycle of challenge and change. When her opponents died, she laughed; when they survived, she laughed too, and he could not tell which of these made her merrier. |
With his beloved mortal idol of the goddess he revered, he formed the Clerisy Enictus, of the Order Tenebrae, a collection of devout dragons who seek to live the ideals of their chosen deities and to spread the word of the Plaguebringer.
(As it turns out, Father Lacesso's Charge was not a physical thing, but some sort of mental/spiritual amalgamation of his thoughts on and the objective ideals/values/principles of Plague and the Plaguebringer. So in essence, he did end up living his life on one eternal mission to "protect" his Charge. Whether he chose his life because of his Charge or his Charge developed from his chosen life is still up for debate.)
