- Cacao
Cacao's egg was discovered by a devout clan from the Sunbeam Ruins at the height of summer, and the dragons who found it believed him to be a sign of good luck during their Brightshine Jubilee festivities. The way his delicate golden features glittered in the sunlight had to be a message that he was chosen by the Lightweaver, despite his pale green eyes.
So he was spirited away by the largely benevolent clan, and treated to the finest life they could provide him as their beautiful prince. Cacao spent a large part of his youth trapped inside the crumbling remains of a castle. Whenever he asked to explore the sun-soaked lands around it, the request was always, always denied. Whether this longing was some higher calling given to him by the playful, nomadic god of his birth or just the restlessness of youth, it didn't matter to Cacao - he was miserable. To make his frustration worse, despite being young, Cacao had soon realized he was nothing but a flashy trophy meant to serve as a figurehead while the clan's more intelligent philosophers and scholars handled everything actually important and interesting. He turned to scrolls filled with stories of other lands to satisfy himself while hoping that someone would someday save him. His knight in shining armor turned out to be a guardian in exquisite silks, but more than that, Cacao realized he needed to save himself. After sneaking out to court the mysterious and beautiful guardian for some weeks, he finally made the decision to quietly slip away from home for good. But not without leaving a calm message for his clanmates, calmly and plainly rationalizing his reasons for leaving; his clan had been restrictive but not cruel, and though Cacao had yet to realize it, he had a gift for seeing every side of a situation. Finally free to fulfill his wanderlust, he traveled throughout Sornieth with his new love, Sandbar, helping her manage the trade routes she had inherited from her family. Cacao spent this period of his life dressed only in simple furs and leather, rejecting the ornate clothes he wore when younger, determined to be seen as just another dragon. And next to the fabulously flashy Sandbar, this worked - up to a point. Cacao has still always attracted a large amount of attention, his good looks and calm demeanor earning him many suitors of all genders. Sometimes, he chooses to pursue these relationships - he and Sandbar are in an open polyamorous marriage - but more often he's just confused what so many dragons see in him. Since settling down in the Virdian Labyrinth and becoming more comfortable with himself and his place in the world, Cacao is once again indulging in the ornate clothes of his youth. Sandbar is ecstatic to lend a hand in dressing him... but, unfortunately, her artistry just attracts him even more attention. Cacao is a quiet dragon who would rather observe than interfere. He absorbed more of his upbringing than he initially realized and, though he often doesn't intend to, exudes an air of princeliness. As one of the more level-headed dragons in the often rambunctious and colorful Bird Of Paradise, Cacao is now one of its premier ambassadors, sent to navigate relationships and secure goods from both allied and hostile clans. His skills as a mediator have given him something of a reputation, and, to be quite honest, he's wholly content with this. It may not be the grand legacy of a king, but this was a destiny he chose for himself, based on his talents. He's finally being seen as a person. |
