You bent close, along with many other listeners, as he opened imagination’s door. There was no knife, no incense, no arcane chanting. Instead, what he said was: “Once upon a time...”

You see the apple tree at a distance, perfectly centered atop the verdant hill, its blossoms gleaming in the pearly morning light. You set out to reach it, and along the way, you welcome wisdom and guidance.
“It’s there,” chuckles the old shepherd, his smile warm and comforting even in the shadows of his cowl. “It’s there,” whispers the fruit seller, and she winks at you over her silken veil. “It’s there,” chirps the meadowlark, before swooping away with a flash of gold-tinged wings. All the guides beckon you ever onward, ushering you towards the dawn. |

After days and moons and uncountable ages, the summit is yours to gain. You ascend in a golden twilight, and see the tree rising against the sky. The blossoms have fallen, as you knew they would, but in their places are scarlet apples, burning with the flames of learning, and of life— And a guardian, all warmth and brilliance, striding out of the shadows to meet you. “Welcome,” they declare, sunlit wings parting one after the other. Behind each one is a face, a voice, a touch of memory, of fleeting friendly encounters. You gazed upon those faces before, heeded those different voices. You heed them now, as you do the claws that still beckon you towards the sun. |

You have known immortality—the perfect stillness of a golden afternoon, caught up in the rapture of storytime. A story that might span days...moons...uncountable ages... The tale comes to a close, the hill with the apple tree recedes...though you fancy you can still catch some traces of wisdom, in the words that drip from its branches. An eye-blink, and now even the tree is gone, and the night’s descending. The storyteller folds golden wings about himself, and with a final smile and a wink, he vanishes into the dark. |
