Persephone
The Grotto Witch

Tear-stained scales shine in the dappled light of the crystalline grotto. Is it starlight, that shone through the jagged cracks in the frail ceiling? Or was it sweet sunlight, of which she has been starved for so long?
Though Persephone wonders, she knows that she would never truly know. Turning back to the darkness, she feels the sorrow stab her like a knife. For just like the light, her once beloved daughter will never rest beneath her gaze again.
But that was your decision. Your choice. Your fault.
A voice stirs inside her head. Filled as she is with fear, Persephone is unsure if it was her own conscience or the darkness that speaks within her.
Such a shame. Dearest Luxa truly was oh so lovely... What a gorgeous addition she would have made to my ranks.
Of course it was them. She should have known, that her mind is no longer her own.
Another tear spills from her inky gaze, desolate with despair, and in that moment of weakness, the shadows rise up. They glow and yet with darkness, with infinite void filled loathing for all that is bright and beautiful. Each slither of shade flows across the damp stone floor of the empty cavern, writhing into knots until they formed one great mass. A dragon.
Persephone stares into the eyes of her once lover, and in the darkness, she sees memories.

A hatchling, laughing. Scales like twilight, but a heart of golden sunshine. She is not theirs, but they took her in. They love her all the same.

Voices, calling out. She is gone, she is lost. 'Luxa!'

Shadows. He runs to her, but the darkness takes over him.

These eyes are not those of her mate. Persephone chokes on the memories, for they are bittersweet coming from the eyes of the shade that controls him. Controls her.
She has been strong. It can see her mind, but it cannot find her heart. Persephone has buried it deep within her. But it is only a matter of time before the shadows reach it.
But they will never reach Luxa. No, she will make sure of that. She knows what she'll have to sacrifice to save her daughter.
And she'll do it in a heartbeat.

She puts up no fight. Shadows surround her, and Persephone lets them.
The eyes bore into her soul.
Given up already? A wise choice I suppose.
No response. She will not give them what they want.
Ah, but I see... You are still fighting. You're still hiding. Protecting your dear Luxa?
It hurts more than anything to hear them talk of her daughter in that way. But she does nothing, for she knows the final strike is next. It will shatter her, tear her apart, destroy her. But all she can do is hope. Not that she'll survive, for she knows it's impossible.
So she will hope that it's all worth it.
That she is strong enough.
That Luxa is safe.

When it comes, it is a painless. A final assault on the mind, a burst of light, and then... Nothing.
She is faintly aware of dark flames pressing in on her chest. She struggles to breathe, momentarily, before the pain bursts into her heart, then flickers out.
The damage is done, and there is nothing left.
Persephone floats in a void of empty, within her own mind.
It worked.

Persephone is trapped. Half consumed by the darkness, fading away each day. But so is the shade, for she fooled it. A simple enchantment was all it took.
And a sacrifice.
But as she gazes at the sky from her dark grotto prison, Persephone is glad.

Luxa

Luxa is Persephone's adopted daughter. The bond between the two is just as strong as that between true mother and child, and Persephone loves Luxa deeply. She swore an oath to protect her daughter soon after her mate was taken by the shade, and fulfilled that oath by sacrificing herself to the shade in order to allow Luxa to escape the grotto they had been hidden within for the past 4 years.

Void

Known formerly as Birch, Void is Persephone's former mate. The two used to be inseparable, a perfect couple and perfect parents. But that all ended when Luxa encountered the shade, and Birch was possessed by it as he tried to save her. After that, Persephone preferred to tell herself that her mate was dead, and that his body was now simply a shell inhabited by the shade. Yet this was not true, and after the shade attacked her and was trapped within her, Birch was transported to the heart of the tangled forest, where he woke with no memory and a mad, shade-touched appearance. Persephone, trapped in the grotto, does not know that her mate is still alive (be it lost, confused, and with no identity) and probably never will.
