The life of a pirate is the only life that Kai has ever known, and he wouldn't have it any other way. He hatched aboard a pirate ship, his egg having been mistakenly plundered by that ship's crew and stowed along with the rest of the goods. Or so he's been told. He has no way of knowing if this is the truth, or just another tale he's heard so many times that it may as well be. Either way, Kai doesn't care where he came from. His eyes are set on where he is going, and on the journey between him and his destination. He says that his father is the great ocean blue, and his mother the clear skies above.
He was raised as a cabin boy, doing the hard labor aboard his ship. He didn't mind, though, as he had to earn his keep. And his crewmates were good to him, always fair to him and each other, and they taught him everything about being a pirate. Kai learned to love the freedom that this life offered, the adventures it is filled with, the camaraderie he built up with his crewmates, and the exhilaration that comes with living fast and dangerously.
Eventually, as Kai grew into his prime, his crewmates grew old. More and more of them retired, and new crewmates joined. Life continued to move on. And then, one fateful evening, they happened across another ship full of pirates. They met in battle, and the fighting dragged long into the night. Kai did not see the battle end, or what happened to his captain and crewmates. He was knocked overboard after sustaining heavy injuries, and wholly convinced that this was the end of his journey.
But it was not the end. He awoke on an unfamiliar ship, with his injuries bandaged, and a bowl of fresh water waiting for him. A young fisherman, noticing he was awake, wandered over and asked how he was feeling. He explained how he saw him in the water, and rescued him. The kind fisherman introduced himself as Nexus, and offered to take Kai to the nearest port town; an offer that Kai quickly took. In the port town, he learned that the pirate crew that attacked his own had killed all of his crewmates and sank his ship. They were celebrating in the tavern. So, Kai took the only logical course of action. He sought out Nexus and asked him to abandon his life as a fisherman to become a pirate with him. Nexus turned his offer down, talking about how he couldn't just drop his entire life, his responsibilities, and leave his home to follow a complete stranger.
Kai said that he understood, and left Nexus to his quiet life of fishing. He found the enemy's ship at the docks and boarded it. He dispatched the few guards left behind on the ship, and set about stealing it. A very difficult task to do alone, but somehow he managed. As he was sailing away with his prize, a dragon came flying after him. Kai prepared to fight, expecting a member of the crew whose ship he just stole, but to his surprise, it was not. It was none other than Nexus. The fisherman said that he had considered Kai's offer, and changed his mind. But when he went to find him, he couldn't. He then saw him leaving the port on this ship and had to fly to catch up to him. He hoped the offer was still good.
Kai welcomed Nexus aboard as the first member of his crew. They would have to stop off in another port and recruit or bribe more dragons to join them and make a full crew. Kai was glad to have a new companion, and that he would not have to sail this ship without a helping hand. He renamed his new ship The Stained Claw and did indeed gather an entirely new crew. He had finally gone from cabin boy to captain. And the first thing on his agenda was to make sure that the crew who sank his old ship never sailed again. After several months, he finally managed to track them down and, in the dead of night, avenge his fallen brothers. It was such a dishonorable thing to do, but since when has a pirate cared about honor?
Nexus turned out to be quite a skilled navigator, and took quite well to life on the water as a pirate, and as Kai's first mate. And Kai remained forever grateful to the ex-fisherman who saved his life. Who threw away his old life to join a complete stranger in a life of piracy. Who became his first mate, and the best navigator Kai had ever seen. Over time, Kai was quite enamored. One might even call him smitten. Nowadays, Captain Kai considers Nexus to be the most valuable treasure on his ship.
