"That's not what I meant!" Her teacher sighed, rubbing her temples, "Nankai, you have extraordinary power that you need to learn how to take care of. L-let's take a break for the rest of the day." Master Ariam said, closing her book.

Nankai nodded and gathered her things. She carefully stacked the spellbooks and writings into her bag, which she then levitated in order to carry it. "I'll see you tomorrow, Master Ariam." She bid farewell to her teacher and walked into what she called the Danger Zone.

Almost immediately they appeared, like they had been drawn out from thin air, which was entirely possible, just unlikely. "Look! It’s the cranberry!” One of them said, poking the hood she always wore. Nankai bit back a sigh. Ever since her mother had called her that on the first day of school, the bullies had tried to get in her way.

“Go away!” She said, pushing past them as she headed down the hall. She could still hear their taunts and - they were following her. Communicating with the telepathy that Nankai herself hadn’t quite grasped. She didn’t see the tail in front of her before she went tumbling down, down, down...

Five years later

Are we all done today, Master Ariam? Nankai asked her teacher through her mind. She was eager to get back to trying to decipher the recurring dream she’s been having.

Yes. Thank you, Nankai. Her teacher nodded.

Nankai stepped out of the classroom, already anticipating what, or rather who, was about to appear. And they did.

She ignored them, not wanting a scuffle, but one stopped her, pulling her back to the group using telekinesis.

Where do you think you’re going, squeaks?” One of them growled. (Nankai actually preferred “squeaks” over “cranberry” because of her friend, Sclera, who only spoke in squeaks, but then again it was Familiar Show & Tell day when she earned that nickname.)

“To lunch, probably. What are you going to eat now that dear mama went to go serve the Arcanist, leaving you here all alone.” Another said, putting on a stupid, fake pity face.

Well, that stung, but Nankai was used to it.

Put me down. She warned in their minds.

“Or what, weakling?” One of them laughed.

Or you might regret the rest of your life.

“Pish posh.” The same one said. Nankai could see a few of the group backing up. Hmmm... they’re smart. She thought to herself.

I said, PUT ME DOWN. She commanded via telepathy. The one holding her flinched, but didn’t obey.

“You’re going to have to make us.”

Well, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Nankai smirked. Part of her had been waiting for this moment for years, though she hated fighting on the offensive.

She flicked her tongue, like a snake, whispering the names of the runes that made up her name. The ground boiled, causing the bullies to take to the sky.

And then Nankai, eyes glowing, roared, breaking free and paralyzing them for long enough for her to sweep a large wind of a certain magical aura under her wings. Then she pushed the wind towards them, causing them to soar uncontrollably into the school’s courtyard. She knew they’d be okay, and hopefully wouldn’t bother her again.

She allowed herself a laugh as everything returned to normal and her talons touched the ground. Never underestimate one who wears a hood. She thought as she headed out of the hallway, heading towards where she kept her lunch hidden. I’m not afraid of them anymore.
