Riverrush | he/him

Description
Riverrush, a timid yet sarcastic scout of the clan, is one of the Hearth’s three founders. He never quite interacts with dragons outside of the scouting team, too shy and introverted to talk to them. But those who know him come to learn of his sharp tongue, and fear for whichever dragon is about to come under his scrutiny.

He remembered his old life.

Flashes of him and another dragon, happily mated and having hatchlings.

Happiness, respect and companionship.

It all burned down in the fire. He couldn’t escape, no dragon could, they all died in that ocean of fire. He couldn’t remember, but he thought a dragon had just left before the disaster happened. He hoped they survived. They deserved better than the feeling of scales melting off cartilage, of bone-deep pain sinking into every one of their limbs, of agony and being turned into a white-hot lump of melted remains.

He thought it was the end, then. Apparently it wasn’t.

At least the Windsinger saw him fit to be blessed, right? At least, without magic, he was still loved by his patron god. He thought hysterically, recalling whispers and insults so sharp they made his heart bleed.

He thought it was the end. He didn’t expect there to be anything after it, except maybe a life where the gods would judge him for his past failings.

He needs you. Fulfill your destiny.

The Windsinger was a little mean, he thought. Leaving his old clanmates to think he wasn’t loved, but now telling him to do his bidding for a dragon he didn’t even know? He sent him back into his old clan, expecting him to- expecting him to just live through it again.

This time around, he ignored the taunts. This time around, he joined in with them, because he agreed. What kind of god would leave their- their CHILD to suffer like this? What kind of god would turn a blind eye to their children’s pain and condemn them to two lifetimes of it?

This time around, he didn’t speak up against it. And they left him alone, only taunting him in the background. They beat him up whenever he tried to tell a dragon about it last time. This time, he was the loner in the clan, and once he came of age, he packed his things, flew away and never looked back. He doubted they would miss him, anyways.

He still struggled with speaking to new dragons. He twitched, a habit he could never quite get rid of. But then he found Stella, his mate, his love, and everything seemed alright for a second. He thought that the Windsinger was actually trying to make things right, and was trying to give him a chance to live happily.

Berwin came. Berwin, their old friend, the co-founder of the Hearth. But it wasn’t the same Berwin. This Berwin could wear the cape of starlight, whilst the old Berwin could only sometimes drape it around his neck. This Berwin held an aura of self-sacrificial kindness, and he saw despair and guilt in this Berwin’s eyes. Berwin, the founder of their old clan, was never self-sacrificial in the way that this one was - he was kind, yes, but he always put himself before other dragons.

Berwin spoke of a mage, a powerful mage who shared his name, who was kindly and never failed to bring a smile to every dragon’s face. Berwin wanted to build the Hearth, so the mage could return and help govern the clan and bring it to its best.

Privately, he thought that this Berwin, the one that took on students and taught them advanced magic so easily and freely, the one that would always spend time with hatchlings and the one that treated everyone as family, was so much better than the last Berwin. Kindness was there for both of them, but this Berwin was selfless and made sandcastles with hatchlings every time they went to a beach. The old Berwin was kindly, but always a step above the others.

Riverrush didn’t want the old Berwin to come. He hoped that this one would notice that he was the best founder any clan would ask for.

He hoped that Berwin would see his own worth one day.
