Sickly and dim from the moment it emerged, Aridatha’s egg was laid on a blistering cold night, the only one of her clutch. Her parents, devastated by the perceived death of the child, tearfully sent their egg off into the ocean to give it a more respectful send-off than what the roaming, ravaging monsters would do to it if abandoned. But Aridatha held on inside that cooling shell, and when she washed up on the shores at the base of the the Cloudscrape Crags, she was still clinging to life. It was there that a lonesome Snowflake Nymph, designated Neve, happened upon the rapidly-freezing egg. The nymph almost dismissed the egg just like her parents, when they decided to take a chance and leaned an ear on the shell. Impossibly, faint but still just barely there, was a heartbeat. With no way to find the parents of this egg, and with no guarantee they’d even want it back, Neve took the child under their wing.

A long-forgotten ice flight nest Neve had already settled in for a home proved the perfect spot for the nymph to set up the egg they had rescued. For days, they tried their best to give the unborn child the love and care it deserved, but the region that was home to the ice dragons was simply too cold for a fire hatchling. But, Neve refused to give up; despite how close the unhatched dragon was to death, it was still burning brightly, and Neve refused to let that flame go out.

So, with no other options, they took a pilgrimage to the land of the fire flight. Across the Frigid Floes they trekked, the hatchling’s heartbeat fading more and more each moment. Braving the allure of the Starwood Strand, through the Wandering Contagion and climbing up over the Reedcleft Ascent, finally to arrive at the Molten Scar. The land there was dangerous for a creature of ice, crashing rocks and lakes of lava, but still Neve persevered, bringing the egg they had sworn to care for to the middle of the volcanic plain. The hatchling inside could barely be heard by then, and so Neve did the only thing they could think of.

They dropped the egg in.

For a stretch of time that to this day they cannot pinpoint, Neve watched the bubbling surface, hope dwindling as each second passed without a sign of a newly hatched dragon. Then, the earthen plates crashed into each other. A quake spread throughout the scar, throwing up waves of magma, and still Neve refused to give up on the hatchling they had traveled so far for. Even as the lava bubbled and rose, even as they could feel themself growing weaker and weaker, even as a crash of molten rock splashed across their wing, they did not budge

Finally, the heat and the chaos of the scar grew to be too much for Neve. They had gone too far out of their depth, a fish out of water, a snowflake in summer, and now they were paying a price. They only wished that the baby dragon would make it out okay.

Before their eyes could close for the last time, the ground beneath Neve rumbled, a roar rising up from within the magma. It grew louder and louder, closer and closer, and the lava parted ways for the dragon soaring up from the depths of the lava. Her eyes blazed with fire and fury, embers dancing and weaving across her ice-blue body. Her wings spread wide, shielding Neve from the cascade of magma, and though her presence held all the terrible beauty of the sun, she brought with her a fierce blizzard, the biting cold wrapping around Neve and pulling her back from the edge.

Against all odds, not only had Aridatha survived, she thrived. And thus, the Frostfire Queen was born.

____Neve would always be considered Aridatha’s caretaker; the Snowflake Nymph had gone above and beyond, faced far too many trials, even lost a wing and their ability to fly for her. Her first thoughts and her first mission were to bring the nymph to the safety of the home they came from; their bond is one that cannot be broken. And yet, as she grew she still wanted to learn where she came from, who her parents were and why they sent her off into the sea. And so, with Neve’s blessing, she made the journey to the land of the fire dragons once more on her own.

____As she migrated through each fire flight clan that accepted her request for a search, she began to realize how little she fit in. Though her core was a fervently burning heart, her exterior had frozen over, heralding the cold she grew up in and brought with her. The region of ice had always been somewhat cold to her, but the volcanic lands of fire felt far too hot.

____With each clan she visited and found no sign of her parents, her hope began to dwindle. Perhaps she’d never be able to find them, or, perhaps, they didn’t want her to find them. That despairing thought finally broke her resolve; heart heavy, no closer to learning where she had started, she began to make the trek back to the parent she was certain did want her.

____It would have been far too easy for a soul like Aridatha’s to grow cold and bitter; it was only by a miracle that even through all her tribulations she did not lose the kind heart quietly beating. Though her exterior is icy and cold, her core fervently burns with the wish to help those who needed her, be they outcasts like her and her family, or simply hurt and lost and needing a helping hand. Her kindness is given in spades to those she cherishes, and yet she still had plenty to give, so give she will. However, beneath that compassion rages a fiery temper that Aridatha wields for her benefit. Her ire is commonly ignited by those who refuse to show a shred of decency, those who would abandon others, and those who turn their back on anyone or anything in need. If she does not stand up for what she believes, well, to her that is no better than stepping aside and letting tragedies happen. All in all, Aridatha is a passionate, compassionate force for good, with no shortage of care or protection to spread throughout Sornieth.

____But, as she was traversing the Southern Icefield, she heard whispers of a fiery dragon who had come to the ice clans just like her, seeking shelter, only to be turned away when her outwardly burning resolve was deemed a threat. Aridatha, who had been lucky enough to have never been turned away but still faced the judgement of those fire dragons who found her frozen exterior disdainful, resolved to find this kindred spirit before she returned to her home.

____And so it was that after weeks of following false leads and rumors, Aridatha found Cendre-or, more accurately, Cendre found Aridatha, led by a Spirit of Ice. A dragon just like her, and yet not the same at all; a dragon with frost billowing out from her core, yet burning with the force of a volcano on the outside. At first, Cendre was wary, but with a little coaxing from Aridatha, she drew the paradoxical dragon out of her damaged shell, and resolved to bring her home to Neve.

____Over the years, Aridatha and Cendre grew close. They found that their touch was a neutral temperature to the other, a perfect balance. They created a home, they taught each other how to harness their respective extremes, they comforted each other when the duality of their existence grew too heavy or the rejection of the clans they were meant to have a place in weighed down on them. Was it any wonder that they became each other’s missing half?

____Another member of their little family came a few months later. One day, while out foraging for herself, Cendre, and Neve, she was approached by a tiny Imperial, named Aeolus, who asked if she was the fire and ice dragon all the other clans talked about. Unsure of what he wanted, and remembering what Cendre had told her about how she had been treated, Aridatha confirmed his question, and Aeolus seemed almost… disappointed. She asked him why he wanted to know, and he told her a story of how he had met another dragon like her at the beginning of his travels, and it was because of her he didn’t give up before his journey even began. He had seen so many wonderful places, done so many incredible things, and he owed it to her. He wanted to thank her.

____Assured he had no bad intentions, Aridatha said she may know the dragon he was looking for, and so she took him back to her home, where he got the chance to thank Cendre once again.

____Aridatha extended the same invitation she had given Cendre that fateful first meeting, and Aeolus settled in with them gladly, first for a day, then a week, then two, and four, all the while growing closer and closer to the little family. He was bright and energetic, a stark contrast to Aridatha and Cendre, but just like everything else in their lives he was the perfect balance they sorely needed, encouraging them to open up more, to go a little further, to do a little more, and in return they followed him across the Southern Icefields, protecting him and just enjoying the world with him.

____He’d never known what a good sibling was like before, he said one day, but he thought that now, maybe, with Aridatha and Cendre, he was learning.

____Eventually, the wind in his blood grew restless at being cooped up, and Aeolus could no longer stay among the ice and snow. Aridatha and Cendre were devastated, but they saw him off with bright smiles regardless, and as he flew off into the sky he let the wind carry back his promise that he would return.

____While Aeolus would never be able to confine himself to one place for years, during those weeks he had found a waypoint, a resting place, and above all, a home with Cendre and Aridatha. Though more than often than not he’d be out on wild travels, free as the wind, he’d always make his way back to the place he left from, and the sisters who would always wait for his return.
