Dethvresh
The Shadehunter
Seeker

"The scent of Shade, however faint, does not lie."

It had always been Dethvresh's goal to join the Seeker ranks. He saw it as the greatest challenge to travel the world hunting Shadebeasts and then drag them back to the Fortress for imprisonment. Unpredictable terrain, no forehand knowledge, then subduing it thoroughly enough to take across the world. His duty seemed to start on an ill star though, as not weeks into his training the Seekers were disbanded. As each of his colleagues were divided one by one between the Keepers and the Sentries, the head of the Overseers spoke up. The strength he'd trained for, to drag prisoners back to the gaol, earned him in a spot deeper in the Icewarden's halls.

Though not his first choice, Overseer work suited him well. The magical talent to freeze things instantly, or thicken ice beyond normal capabilities, didn't come quickly but with so many years to practice, perfection came with time. Seeing the massive monstrous things kept frozen solid in the gaols, things so resilient that they could never be killed and must be kept frozen, only forged his infant desires into a cold-steel resolve to combat the Shade until the end of his days. So when, centuries later, the Seekers were finally reinstated because of the corruption apparently evident everywhere, his old boss came back to claim him again.

Finally completing his Seeker training, he was permitted to leave the fortress his race hadn't set foot from in centuries. The warnings couldn't compare to how saturated the world smelled of Shade the further north he went and he spent several months in the northern Icefields to adjust. Dawn and dusk he spent on the glacier edge by the sea, taking deep breaths. Sensitivity is good until it was overwhelming, especially when he started trying to apply it to find shade-touched dragons. The smell of crisp salt and snow, musty fur and that light tint of black-rot Shadesmell became his new baseline.

The monsters were easy to identify, simply being more aggressive and destructive, unable to hide their Shade reek. But every dragon smelled slightly of shade, even if they weren't actually possessed. It makes him feel a bit stupid. He should be able to tell, given all his training and exposure, right? But from all the reports, the Shade is less concentrated than before their sequestration and its influence no longer creates the ravening draconic monstrosities he's used to. His strength wasn't serving him well here, but he'd adapted before. He could do it again.

So he started listening to people. He didn't talk much, unsure what to say at first particularly with everything being so different from his home. He listened in on social dragon circles, seated uncomfortably on cushions amid chatty dragonesses and suave drakes. He watched and stalked loner dragons, hidden in shadows or cover of night. Thankfully he didn't have to rely on social skills and intuition for his final decision. A good whiff of stronger than normal Shadescent could prove guilt miles longer than behavior.

And his first prisoner is not nearly what he would expect; a social, well-liked skydancer who turned almost feral when confronted with his feeding on clanmates and lying. He froze him solid before he could land any blows with either his sharp claws or the writhing shadow, looped the block with chains, and Dethvresh began the long trek back to the Fortress.

He's done only a few other imprisonments since then. It seems the Shade outside truly isn't what it was back when the Fortress closed and there are fewer truly dangerous feral and monstrous Shade-touched. Instead he spends a lot of time traveling and talking to various clans as the new way to find targets. He's comparably social for a gaoler, still considered reserved for a modern breed, but willing to talk about his breed's history. He's taken up patrolling the Hewn City and surrounding territory. The Shadesmell sometimes wafts stronger there and anything could have wandered out.

The Imperial Shadetouched he encounters in Clan Mediasolis is the first time he's ever seen an honestly friendly one. Most surprisingly, he doesn't hide it. He's covered extensively in Lightbound ribbons and his surely-black eyes are covered by a veil but he can't hide the smell. He chitchats nicely with Dethvresh about the weather and how the clan was founded, basking unguarded in the sunbaked courtyard. Some asking around reveals his story, of a courageous exaltee who leapt to defend his fellows against a Shade fragment. His affliction isn't a secret and he remains the darling of his trainer.

That's all well and good, but it's no guarantee. It doesn't seem right to drag him back to the Fortress, but the Fortress should know. Maybe they'll have an idea of what to do. And it's not like Dethvresh is far away should anything go wrong.
And maybe a year after he sends news, he gets word that an old friend from his Overseer days is coming to the Ruins. Young Vencerast was ordered to set up a new gaol in the Ruins, in part for the Shadetouched he'd reported. He's to be officially attached to his new gaol, and he welcomes having a friend he can trust. Though now he's the oldest in the gaol and that's strange.
