"Forgiveness is for the weak"

Skell was an academic most of his life. He stayed within the walls of Lightweaver's library and was well respected for his work. He was uptight, rather snooty and certainly made more than his fair share of enemies among the ranks of the scholars. Others saw him as a threat to their reputations as he was well known for disproving certain scholar's theories surrounding transmutation practices and their use.

It was exactly this which caused his downfall. A few scholars Skell had wronged hired an assassin to take him out. Thankfully their plan didn't go quite to plan. Instead Skell suffered a massive fall which broke 1 wing and his spine and he was left for dead across the border from light in the Stormcatcher's domain. Luckily for Skell, his assassin did not finish the job properly and he was saved by a passing nomadic clan who nursed him back to health. They could not do anything about his broken spine, however so they deposited him in the safety of Goldensparc before continuing on their travels.

There, Skell grew bitter. He was furious about the fact that he could no longer walk, no longer return to the library for fear of another attempt on his life, no longer even fly. So, out of spite, Skell began to write and research further into the fabled transmutation practices of changing the properties of metal. Using the meager library in his new place of residence, a borrowed cauldron and his endless time left sitting at a desk unable to move without help, he began to perfect a formula. And perfect it he did. By the end of his fifth year at that same desk he could turn any metal into gold and back again. He kept his exact formulas a secret, but published a new paper detailing how it was possible, trying to draw out those who had wronged him all those years ago.
Instead, Skell received a package. "From the Proprietor" it read, "Should you consider putting your skills to good use, seek employment here" listing an address. Inside was a mechanical exoskeleton for his hind legs. As fast as he could, Skell had his assistant help him into the device, his atrophied legs feeling rather out of place now that he was standing on them again. It felt surreal to stand on his own after all those years, eliciting a feeling of thrill to the point that he almost forgot about his work entirely. It took a few weeks of practice and periodic breaks but once he felt confident in his legs he picked up the card and headed to the address.

A black and brown spiral answered the door, peering over her glasses at him.

"Here for the job, the metal alchemist" He said.

"Ah, right this way"

And so, Skell found himself in Whistleshop, offered a very handsome fee plus protection for his services, and went right to work. He settled in nicely with the crew, slowly loosing his prickly exterior and getting back to his normal aloof self. There was something about the employees of the mechanics shop that made it seem far closer to a family than a workplace and the other dragons accepted Skell far quicker than any of the academics ever had and so he let more of his true personality shine through.
