Raise a glass

She doesn't remember meeting him, the same way no one really remembers meeting an older sibling. The fae was always in her life, and she couldn't imagine not knowing those pink eyes as he watched her learn to walk and then fly, steadying her before she fell. They were friends rather than siblings, but it hardly mattered to either of them.

The two of them would race in the skies, forage the forest in search of treasure, and drive their parents mad and they made pretend recipes with real food ingredients. Nothing could separate them.

Until he was old enough to learn under a mentor, leaving her behind.

He still visits her, bringing complaints of long days in front of books when he's tired and wants to sleep. Other days, he's full of energy, telling her every detail of every lesson he can remember. She barely understands a word, years away from her own lessons, but she listens, waiting for the moment he's done so they can play.

He still goes with her to the forest, the two of them picking berries and leaves. Now, he tells her which plants can be used in potions, and she nods when he looks over to glance at her. They eat most of the berries before they go home, and the leaves are tossed back on the forest floor for the bugs.

That night, he tells her that he has a great idea for tomorrow.

She doesn't agree at first.

It sounds dangerous, she argues. They could get hurt. They could get in trouble. He barely started his lessons, she was too young to begin hers, did he know what he was doing?

Of course he knew, he told her. He read the books, studied the ritual, and they were both Arcane dragons. They could do it. It was a simple summoning ritual, something to bring a familiar from the other side of the Forbidden Portal. It would probably just be a Calico Ferberus, he assures. Something cute. Harmless.

Harmless, she nods. He never led her astray before.

They read the books, memorizing the words and summoning runes. There was no room for mistakes.

No room for mistakes.

It happens too fast for her mind to comprehend.

Everything was okay, and then–

She sees pink eyes widen in fear. He looks scared, tries to reach forward and grab her, but something else gets her first.

It wasn't a dragon claw. It was too long, too strong, pulling her towards the summoning circle. She tries to pull herself free, but it wouldn't let go, forcing her inside the circle.

For a moment, there is nothing.

And then, she opens her eyes.

Ghosts

She's sitting in the circle. Nothing hurts. Nothing aches. She has all of her limbs, her senses. It's as if the last few days never happened.

She sees him sitting at the edge, staring past her. She murmurs her name, but he doesn't reply.

Shock, she guesses.

She tries to tell him that it's okay, that he saved her in the end, but he still doesn't say anything, just stares blankly ahead.

She reaches forward, hoping that touch will snap him into awareness.

Her claws pass through his shoulder.

Carefully, she steps out of the summoning circle, but he still doesn't look at her. He can't see her at all. She calls his name, screams it, but he just sits there until the sun sets and he has to go back home.

She follows, because there is nowhere else to go.

As she walks, she realizes that she can't feel the cold of the night, the leaves beneath her feet. Running her claws against the trees does nothing, not a scratch or sound. There are no tracks behind her.

She walks on, following her friend into the night and into the next morning.

He doesn't get better. He gets worse.

To watch
silent

━━━━━ ◇ ━━━━━

There's nothing she can do but watch as he breaks. His mentor loses hope in him, the once-bright student, until he decides to leave his home.

It must be for the best, she thinks. He can't stare at the remnants of the summoning circle anymore.

He leaves, taking a stolen book with him. She thought he learned his lesson, but it seems she was wrong. He uses magic on others with reckless abandon. She doesn't understand, until she does.

He's lonely. He has no one to love him for himself. He pretends to be someone else, hiding his past, but this means that no one knows him. She sees it in his blank eyes, the way he carefully rereads the enchantments, how he silently wonders what's missing.

She wishes she could carve the answer in a mirror, could conjure it in a dream.

She wishes he was taken in the summoning circle instead, just so she wouldn't see him so lost now.
