It was a gloomy, blustery day in September when the earthquake struck. The clouds lay heavy over the small homestead, tinging the landscape in a melancholy grey. Necropolis was watching the waves break incessantly against the cliffside at the edges of the property, wings folded tightly against her body in an effort to stay grounded. Rocking ever so slightly in the gale, the earth’s initial tremor went unnoticed.

She did not miss the second convulsion.

The cliff began the crumble beneath her claws, rocks sliding into the relentless wake below. Her wings fluttered open in shock and she allowed the wind to lift her into the sky. With a dragon’s view of her surroundings, the copper-toned Veilspun morosely watched the destruction. A resounding crack signaled the cliff’s departure from the mainland as the natural disaster continued. Had Necropolis stayed perched on the edge of her world, she would have accompanied the plunging boulders into the briny deep.

The onslaught of elements did not waiver she watched her cottage collapse. Wood splintered and stone crumbled as the terrain continued to tremble. Fighting the ceaseless zephyr, she maneuvered her way further up the mainland and towards the rubble she once called home. Tears fell from her azure eyes; whether from the unending breeze or her own despair, she did not know.

An eternity passed until the birdsong resumed.

Necropolis shivered in what little light escaped the clouds. Though the wind continued, the earth had stilled. The elements, it seemed, had no intention to comfort. A forlorn sigh escaped the Veilspun as she gingerly picked her way closer to the remains of her home. Through the debris, she spotted pieces of her life – remnants of her pantry peeking through fragments of wood; the corner of a pillow underneath the shattered remains of terracotta tiles that had once made up the roof.

Another sigh escaped her as she began to pick up the pieces of her world. It would take days, perhaps months, to sift through the destruction. And though the ochre dragon mourned the sudden loss of her sanctuary, she intimately understood the necessity of creation and all the joys the journey would bring. She had been down this road once before.

She would not falter. Not again.
