I would shatter the sun, my love,
if it would bring you comfort and warmth.

blankblank There was something unsettling about the altar, no matter how many times Queen and King saw it. The pool at its center was a slough of black fetid muck with reaching tendrils that made most dragons shudder at the sight. King was the first to step closer, violet eyes flashing with excitement.

“It’s beautiful,” he breathed, reaching out with a single claw.

“Don’t.” Queen’s voice was quick, barely a whisper, but in the utter silence of the Thorndark Altar, it was enough.

King let his foreleg retreat, turning his head to eye Queen. He blinked at her, his eyes bright in the gloom.

“Are you ready?” she asked, letting her magic climb over her claws.

“Always.”

The pair worked quickly, taking stances on opposite sides of the pool. King turned his head to his right, where across acres of dried out stone and dirt was the cresting archway of the Sunportal. Even now, in the dim light of the half-dawn—for the sun never truly encroached on the Shadowbinder’s land—guards crept like flitting ghouls around the portal entrance, wary of letting a single Light dragon slip through unsupervised. It was said that, through the stone archway, the smell of sweet summer grass drifted through on a warm breeze.

Queen breathed in the scent, the flowers on her wings seeming to glow with the in and out of her lungs as her magic swelled around her. Eyes soaking her in, King was acoss the way, spreading out his wings and letting the aura of magic that constantly seemed to float around him spin with energy.

From the great pool, Shadow magic seemed to thrum with sudden life. The liquid muck vibrated as if from a quake low in the earth, lapping at the edge of its stone confines as if hungry and ready to escape.

“Now,” Queen exhaled, voice strained. On cue, King snapped his wings with the force of his magic, and it burst towards Queen as she did the same. The energy met in the middle, dark purple waves of Shadow magic colliding and knotting into something more.

Across the way, shouts echoed through the dark. The Sunportal seemed to let out a hiss, and then the world grew bright as stark, vivid sunlight burst like a beam from the archway. The light was bright enough to cause both Queen and King to scatter, stumbling and blinking away the sudden luminance.

The delay would cost them. The sounds of shocked and angered dragons reached their ears, and the pair locked eyes from across the pool before leaping to their feet and running running running towards the Sunportal. They dodged outstretched claws, bolts of Shadow magic, and the tangling roots that tried to get in their way. And then, so suddenly it burned, they were in the bright sunlight of the Sunbeam Ruins.

At first, it was entirely blinding after the eternal darkness of their homeland. Both dragons struggled to catch their bearings, to see, and ran stumbling in whatever direction took them away from the Moonportal.

On the Light’s side, there was seemingly no one to guard the portal. Perhaps it because theirs was on a tiny scrap of land that led only to the Hewn City, the dismal land making for its own protection. If any Shadow dragons dared followed them through the portal, they did not give further chase.

It was a relief to quit their running, to catch their breath and let their eyes adjust. Queen lay down on the grass, panting, eyes flicking over to King who let his wings stretch and catch the light.

“Eleven,” he breathed. “We should have left sooner.”

“You say that now, with that Hewn shade casting its gloom over us even from here. You’ll be squawking a different tune once we’re in the Ruins proper.”

“Or that awful Ashfall Waste.” King barely suppressed a shudder. “But those will be pitstops only, right? Our true destination won’t be nearly so bad for the likes of us.”

“No,” Queen agreed. “The Southern Icefields will be a cold calm balm on our scales once we’re there. But we have much to do first.”

King nodded his head, agreeing. “Much to do.”

And much to leave behind. A city, a people. Responsibility that neither could bear the weight of anymore. But none of that could follow them through the portal, not now.
