Whisper's name was apt, he was a quiet dragon, and had learnt long ago to slip by unnoticed. It was hard to hide oneself as coming from the Scarred Wasteland, the scent of decay and disease had a tendency to stick to one's mane. The toxic patterning of his wings only strove to make other dragons more suspcious. He quickly began to regret leaving his home region, epecially when he got himself lost and ended up in the Viridian Labyrinth.

His muted colours were plain to spot amongst the verdent landscape, and this was a place where dragons were likely to be hostile towards him. If only he had taken after his mother - a slim coatl in shades of pale green - but unfortuantely he had his father's large frame and didn't share either of their colours.

A Spiral tumbled out of the undergrowth, and a small, dark Pearlcatcher hatchling darted past her.

"Milky! You can't play this far ou- oh!"

She almost tripped over her own tail trying not to bump into Whisper. The hatchling did not have such coordination, colliding into his chest with a squeak and dropping her pearl. Whisper stopped it rolling with his tail.

"Go on, little one, I'm not going to take it."

The young dragon pounced and held the pearl securely between both front paws. She quickly hurried behing the Spiral, and peered out at Whisper cautiously.

"Thank you, and sorry about that. Things are a little hectic here."

She frowned as she considered Whisper, and he tensed, ready to be turfed out of the territory.

"You look lost, are you alright? I'm Lily, by the way."

Whisper breathed a sigh of relief. This had been the last place he had expected to encounter kindness, but that made it all the sweeter.

Whisper had always been a little lost, he just hadn't realised. He thought that joining the Meristema Clan would solve the problem, but he still didn't really... fit. He tried settling down, having a family like the other members of this fresh new clan were doing. He approached Rosalind, a kind, wise dragon who had spent much of her life alone too. She had never had a family before either, he related to her, felt comfortable with her, and they seemed like a good match.

They had two fine sons, but that didn't make Whisper feel anything more. He loved them, of course, but still found himself a little awkward. Rosalind seemed to take to motherhood naturally. Once Tia and Picon had grown, the latter going to live in their sister clan in the Highlands, Rosalind confessed she still didn't feel more than friendship towards him.

Whisper hadn't expected to feel so relieved. They moved to separate dens, but remained close friends, and Whisper focused on concocting medicines and antidotes to make himself useful to the clan.

But having a family still felt like something he ought to do, and when Milky approached him, desperate to have hatchlings of her own, he accepted. The experience was much the same and yet he repeated it with Ratcha, who seemed just as puzzled as himself after making their nest.

She was the one who finally solved his predicament.

"You know, maybe we're looking at things the wrong way."

"How so?"

"I know my parents are super supportive and excited about building families, but it's not a requirement of being in this clan is it? And there are all sorts of ways to have a family, I mean, the whole clan together is one big family, right? Maybe all you need is close friends, and it doesnt have to be anything more. Or maybe, if you want something romantic, you're looking at the wrong dragons."

After that, Whisper was content to return to his work, and found joy in doing just that. He was still a reserved dragon, but his confused attempts at relationships had left him with firm friendships. Rosalind often stopped by, and Ratcha would treat him like a veterinarian, asking for his expertise in potions whenever one of her critters wasn't behaving as usual.

Of course, after all of this time, romance found him when he wasn't looking. Lily's son Sky was often as busy at his work as Whisper was, making predictions about the health of potential offspring, being called to collaborate with Opaline to aid dragons seeking physical changes. As a result, he was the child of Lily's that Whisper had seen the least. But when they did meet... well, they immediately clicked in a way he'd never experienced before. They were both dedicated to their work, and they respected and understood that and they very much appreciated being able to curl up together and switch off after working all day.

Ratcha had been right, all this time Whisper had been looking at things the wrong way. All he really needed to do was stop forcing things to happen and let them fall into place naturally.
