Biography

Clan Mom. She wants to set this right.
Perdix and Tau were once respected Keepers, imprisoning lesser instances of the Shade in the Fortress of Ends. They were good at their job, strong and dutiful Gaolers who heeded the Icewarden's commands, blocking out the whispers of the Shade and keeping their minds and claws on their work.
One day, a new charge was brought in. A dragon-shaped thing that reeked of the shade, with mad, swirling eyes, labelled a horror and a threat.
Because of the prisoner's unique abilities--he could see a mosaic of places at once, and understood the layout of the Fortress in mere moments, through his strange eyes--he was to be heavily guarded, and Perdix and Tau were given the job.
They'd seen shades before, but never this close, their work mostly concerned with the Shade-touched. The prisoner didn't look like the mindless, hungry, raging monster that the Shade was supposed to be. He looked scared, confused.
In a moment of weakness, Perdix allowed himself to listen to the whispers of his captive, and heard . . . cries for help. Pleas to go back to where he'd come from, to let him out, to make the visions stop.
Perdix told Tau, his trusted mate, and Tau cautiously did the same. They started speaking back to their captive, who called himself Delos, in secret, and realized with sinking horror that he was truly a person like any other dragon, not some sick, scheming monster.
The two were wracked with guilt. They couldn't allow Delos to be locked away, frozen and terrified, for the rest of time. On their patrols, they started listening to the other prisoners, and found that some were just as alive as Del--calling out helplessly in hope, in fear, in cold, in pain, in hunger.
What else could they do?
They staged a jailbreak. Not of the entire Shade--fully freeing the Fortress of Ends would take a god greater than the Icewarden, and certainly greater than Perdix.
Tau shattered the icy walls of Del's cell with her horns, and together the two of them half-carried the weakened Shade out of the Fortress and into the snow.
This was the birth of the Arctic Heart; two traitorous wardens and a strange prisoner.
They kept moving, making camp for a few days before packing up, patrolling the Icefields as friends and protectors to Shades seeking rest from the Icewarden's endless chase, and half-jokingly called themselves the heart of the arctic.
The Heart grew fast, like-minded dragons and Shades and everything in between joining their ranks, even if only for a night of rest, and all quietly spreading the word.
The Arctic Heart grows stronger.
