Born into royalty, Chiron was the heir to the throne of Cassia, a prosperous Veilspun kingdom located in the Starwood Strand. He grew up spoiled and arrogant, lavished with treasures and trained for his glorious destiny as king, but then tragedy struck. Late one night, the current king was killed by an unknown assassin, and Chiron entered his study minutes later to find him dead, speared by one of his own ceremonial knives. The young Veilspun pulled the knife from his father's heart and stood, shocked and horrified, staring at the weapon, unable to move until a palace guard stumbled onto the scene and apprehended him.

The official verdict was that Chiron was guilty of killing the king in order to take the throne, although for many he was more of a scapegoat than a proven criminal. The kingdom at large needed someone to blame for their king's death, and so the one living dragon found on the scene was convicted. Due to his young age, however, Chiron was spared from execution and instead cast out of the kingdom, exiled forever. He was allowed to keep the brilliant crystal jewelry he always wore, as its weight prevented him from flying and would, in the eyes of the palace guards, lead to his death without breaking the kingdom's laws. After all, they reasoned, the haughty young prince always refused to remove the ornaments under normal circumstances, so why would he be any different now? This was unnecessary, however, as Chiron had no clue how to survive on his own and would have died regardless of whether or not his wings were usable.

A pair of guards carried Chiron far away, to the edge of the Tangled Wood, and abandoned him, leaving him to fend for himself. A fight with a fox tore off half of one of the pretty diaphanous wings on his head and caused his jewelry to stab through one of the ones on his side, and thorns snagged his long mane at every turn. Food was scarce, as Chiron had no idea how to hunt for himself and didn't know what plants were safe to eat, and after days of being alone and nearly helpless, he finally collapsed near the border of the Sunbeam Ruins. As he lay dying, a Lanternlight Clan hunting party stumbled upon him, drawn by the glittering of his wing ornaments, and immediately brought him back to their lair, where he was nursed back to health and ultimately decided to join the clan, humbled by his experiences.
