Bedtime stories tell of the forest faefolk, creatures that steal and hide away dragons who get lost in the woods, never to see the light of home again. While these vague accounts are usually seen simply as sleep aids, some tales are closer to truth than the drakes of Sornieth would like to believe; however, as we all know, truth is often stranger than fiction.

"Please... someone, anyone, take me away from this. I need your help..."

Small cries sound out from the maw of a young Pearlcatcher. Her pearl is stained by her own life force, a gash on her chest slowly flowing with each shallow breath she takes. She calls for help for as long as her lungs hold out, but she soon slips into a deep sleep induced by blood-loss. Only when her head falls to the ground do the eyes of the wood gleam, and, sure as the moons reflect the sun, a swarm of Veilspun creep out from the bushes. One in particular, barely the size of a newborn kitten, flutters forward- she curls her little body around the Pearlcatcher's horn, and a light emanates from her body, casting a blue shield across the larger dragon. Then, in a blinding flash, all of them are gone without a trace.

One creature in the bushes lingers for a few moments more, moonlight glinting off pale skin. Eyes burning with a cyan flame, the beast softly sighs to itself before disappearing into the fey realm
with the rest of its kin.

The Pearlcatcher wakes up from her stupor with little recollection of the past, her pearl polished and gently placed beside her head. Lack of pain startles her into full wakefulness, and she sits up in a panic. What happened? Where's her wound? Where is she? The surrounding area is quite bright, appearing to be a cavern covered stone by stone in shimmering lichen and bioluminescent fungi of all shapes and sizes. No one appears to be around, except...

{Hello! I was a little worried for a second, you seemed real out of it. You should be fine now. May I ask your name?}

A tiny Veilspun child sits on the Pearlcatcher's snout, bowing her head out of politeness. Stunned, the larger dragon can do nothing but speak in a nearly silent voice- "It's... Tik. Er, excuse me, but what is yours?"

The Veil laughs with a high-pitched chiming sound, and responds sweetly- {Oh no dear child, you don't need to know that. You may call me the fair whisper if you like, or perhaps the faded one. You should stay a while! You look hungry, Tik...}

Tik ponders for a moment, trying to concentrate her foggy thoughts. She barely remembers a warning from one of the bedtime stories she'd been told recently, one that forbids partaking in food offered by the fey folk, but the thought is whisked from her mind as a plate of sweet-smelling grapes is brought before her by two larger veilspun. They certainly look delicious. The faded one watches with glee as Tik gently plucks a grape, popping it in her maw- and with that, all of her memories flood back. Her face drops in abject horror as she realizes what just happened, and she turns to the faded one for whatever may be asked of her.

{No, no, Tik, don't worry so much! I'm a gentle queen, I would never ask something terrible of you. Dear child, all I wish right now is to know what happened to cause that nasty wound on your heart, so that I may confront whoever created it with a question.}

Tik, now unable to refuse an answer, speaks bluntly; "My brother did that. He changed somehow, after returning from a hunting trip a few weeks ago- he's been different, more distant and angry. Today, or whenever it was, he snapped... he killed mom," with the mention of her mother, Tik breaks down into tears at the memory, leaving the faded one to process this info.

{Oh dearie me, sounds like you met a changeling. They really need to stop intruding on my grounds... Don't you worry your pretty little mind, child... I'll see what I can do.}

<A changeling? Are you sure?>

{Positive, my prince. You're welcome to come with me if you'd like- I know how you've been itching to fight for a bit, Calcie. Your right of passage has been coming up for a while now, and I don't see why we can't boost you forward a bit... it'll be fun!}

The fair whisper smiles with a sickeningly sweet grin, at once both gentle and threatening. Calcifer shrank his head back from her gaze; he knew this was probably punishment for his frequent trips outside the kingdom. He was never one to back down from a chance to use his claws, but changelings were another matter entirely- these were creatures that stole your most precious memories and used them to tear your heart out. However, his mother was a beast far more vindictive and cunning. If she were by his side, he would survive and be stronger for it... and if he didn't go at all, he might be forced to live as a hare for a month.

<...Alright. I suppose a changeling is better than a Fell or a Manatisk.>

{That's my boy! Let's go wreak havoc on the one who wronged our poor little guest then, shall we?}

At that, the faded one takes up a perch on one of Calcifer's horns, pointing him out through the gates. The fiend chuckles nervously before leaping into a gallop towards the plane of reality.
