"Don't judge me by my past, I don't live there anymore"

Background Story

Suroa used to rule the Nevernight Woods by Ranka's side, after successfully overthrowing the two original founders Etna and Quatro.

Suroa and Ranka started the era of tyranny and war. They worked towards the goal of building the largest clan in the world, hoping to eventually unify all the regions and stop the conflict of whole dragonkind to beat the Shade. Or that's at least what Suroa was led to believe.

However, Ranka became addicted to power and turned vicious. Soon Suroa found himself being treated as an inferior pawn rather than an equal ruler. Those who failed to please Ranka often received brutal beating and Suroa was not an exception. Some subordinates were even killed as a warning to others. Ranka also threatened to kill Suroa many times for questioning her. He did find out later that Ranka was trying to build an army in order to kill one of the elemental dragon Gods to claim their power as her own.

This didn't sit right with Suroa. He believed the world's balance might collapse if they did somehow manage to kill one of the Gods and that'd lead to the Shade becoming even a bigger problem.

Suroa started to plan a rebellion and quietly recruited dragons to ultimately try overthrowing Ranka from power. Some dragons gladly joined the cause, but others were harder to convince because of their deep fear for the powerful queen. Word about the uprising spread and eventually reached Ranka's ears. One night she ordered Suroa to come see her.

"Ah, there you are. Long time no see, my partner." Ranka sat on a chiseled rock and looked down on Suroa with a devious smile. The pearlcatcher stared back at her coldly.
"Do you have something to discuss with me?"
"Discuss?" Ranka spat dismissively. "No."
Suroa lifted an eyebrow, already not liking the feeling he was getting.
"Then why was I called here?"
Ranka smiled wickedly, showing her sharp white teeth. She raised from her seat and leaped right in front of Suroa. The ground shook so hard that he was almost knocked off his feet.
"I heard you've been planning a rebellion behind my back. I'd have loved to order you to get shred into pieces right then and there but... I'm not a coward like you. That's why we'll fight tonight one on one. If you win, the clan is yours. If I win, you and your scheming friends will die."

Suroa had frozen in place terrified for his life. Ranka was much larger and more powerful than him. He wasn't prepared to fight her alone. He needed his allies to win this.
"Are you ready? Here I come!" With that warning, Ranka made a lunge towards Suroa trying to bite him in the face. Suroa snapped out of his fear, jumping back reflexively. He didn't plan to stay and fight. Instead he was trying to think about a way to escape, while Ranka was continuing her attacks biting and clawing. The fact that Suroa wasn't trying to fight back enraged Ranka.
"Stop running you coward and fight me!" She roared, chasing him relentlessly.
After more running and dodging Suroa came up with a simple plan. He used a spell of blinding light to stop Ranka for now and flew off to find his allies.

Suroa gathered all his allies during the same night. They made a surprisingly large group - almost all of the clan was with him. He noticed that even some of Ranka's most trusted guards had joined them tonight. Suroa heard from them that Ranka had gone into a rampage after he'd fled the fight. She had attacked one of her guards during her blind rage.

They marched together to see the queen of terror and found her alone in the cave. She seemed to be calmed down, resting on the chiseled rock. She didn't budge, even though dragons started to pour into the cave.
"Ranka, we are here to overthrow you. This is what the whole clan wants. Nobody here serves you anymore." Suroa spoke and stepped out of the crowd. Ranka's eyes scan the room, but she didn't say anything or move. Everyone kept a respectful distance in case she decided to suddenly attack.
"We won't harm you if you come with us peacefully." He continued.
Ranka finally let out a sound, a scoff. "Why would you treat me well after hurting you for so long time? Why won't you all just get your revenge and end me?"

"I would love to get my revenge right here and now, but.. and I may be a coward, but I'm not cruel like you."
Ranka burst into laughter. Everyone looked bewildered. There was nothing ominous in her laughter, there was only genuine amusement in her tone. It sounded almost too pure of a noice to come out of her. Suroa smiled weakly.
"Fine. I'm coming." Ranka raised from her resting position and stepped down from the huge stone. The crowd kept it's distance and made room for her to get out. Once outside, she stopped next to Suroa.
"What happens now, then? Are you going to be the next leader?" Ranka asked with slight amusement still in her voice.
"The clan will decide on the next leader together and what comes to you Ranka... We'll keep you restrained until the clan has decided on your fate." Ranka rolled her eyes, but before she could speak Suroa cut her off.
"Don't worry. If you don't give us anymore trouble I promise we won't hurt you."
Ranka fell quiet and then nodded, letting herself to be escorted into a dungeon.

Later the clan voted for the most fitting leader. Suroa naturally ranked high and ended up taking the formal leader role. The topic of Ranka's fate wasn't as easy one to solve. The clan was divided in two - those who were for the death sentence and those who sided with Suroa. After a long debate, they couldn't have consensus and the dragons who couldn't forgive Ranka ended up leaving the clan. Ranka was spared, albeit she'd spend many years imprisoned.

Favorite food: Flower petals of different kinds.
Likes: Books, scrolls, spells and mornings.
Relationships:
Ranka - Suroa has a very complex relationship with Ranka. Although the two have had a rough past, they're slowly starting to warm up to each other again. Suroa is a very forgiving dragon, almost to a fault. Nobody can understand what Suroa sees in Ranka, who seems to have completely opposing personality.
