ZYLEN MYST
Library Ghost

Another ghost appeared in the library after he seemingly drowned to his death. Unlike Meir, Zylen can only be seen by his friend, the strange fish spirit who follows him around, and Eurus, any other patrons of the library simply feeling a cold breeze as he goes by. It is hard for him to adjust to his new afterlife in the library, but he is glad to finally see Meir again.

When Zylen awoke, he was on dry land. He wasn’t even on the shores by the ferry anymore, instead in an unfamiliar library. Though it was dark outside, the library still hummed with a quiet energy as he heard chattering in the distance. Standing up and fluttering to a shelf, he picked up a book at random. It was a book of herbal remedies, seemingly from the gladeveins. He let out a sigh. Meir probably would’ve thought the book quite interesting. Putting it back, he emerged into a common room. A variety of different sized chairs and couches were scattered at random, some his size being hung from the sides of the bookshelves themselves. A few young dragons seemed to be studying, flipping through dense textbooks incredibly bored. Of all the places he was now, why was he here?

Eventually, after aimlessly floating about, he decided he had to leave. His coworkers had to be worried about him, and he had no idea how far from the manor he was at the moment. He couldn’t waste his time in a random library when he was still technically on duty. The moment he attempted to exit, however, something blocked the way. It was almost like a pane of glass separated him from the rest of the building. With a huff, he decided it was best to wait. Whether it was some obscure happening caused by whatever plagued the manor or not, the library was empty now. Morning would break soon enough and he could ask someone then.

The first person he saw in the morning was a red imperial, concerningly small for his breed. He seemed to weave his way through the bookshelves to the farthest end of the library. Curious, Zylen followed him, silently drifting behind the dragon as he eventually stopped at what could only be described as an explosion of books. In the center, under a few blankets, there seemed to be some sort of sleeping creature, a manuscript right beside it.

“Meir. It’s morning, could you please wake up?” The imperial gave the blanket a poke, revealing a very disgruntled mirror. Zylen simply stared in confusion. Was… was this actually him? Was he dreaming?
“Eurus, I deserve to sleep in, I’m dead.” The mirror adjusted the blankets, curling up again.
“Dead or not, I brought you this. Lateviar says if you so much as crease a page she’s going to kill you again,” The imperial pulled out an ancient-looking book, to which the mirror eagerly snatched up. When he got up, though, his eyes met Zylen’s and he froze.
“Uhhh, Meir, you alright?” The imperial turned as well, seeing Zylen staring confused at the mirror, “Oh. Uh. Hello there?”
“…this isn’t real. You’re one of them, aren’t you?” Zylen bristled at the imperial, preparing a bolt of magic. Even if he was stuck here, he wouldn’t go down without a fight.
"Okay, uh. Calm down, random ghost, I don't know who they are but-"
"Ghost?! Excuse me? I don't know what you're trying to get from this but-" His angry speech was quickly interrupted by the imperial picking a book up off the shelf and throwing it at him. No, not at him- through him. The book sailed clean through him and landed with a thud behind him.
"Zylen, you're actually here! But... you died???" The mirror emerged from the book nest and went to inspect the fae, "But you don't look dead? You look fine, aside from your scales being bleached, which-"
"I... I drowned, Meir. And the scales are a whole other story. I'm just glad to see you again." Zylen turned to the imperial, "And... I'm sorry, the months that have passed since I last saw him... let's just say it's been complicated."
"Ah. Understandable. I'll let you two catch up then, I have some work to grade. Oh, and welcome to Laputa by the way. make yourself at home in the library."

Information (written by HenryJekyll as part of their pinkerlocke):

Avatar of the Lonely as of Day 46
Formerly a librarian's assistant, Zylen is intelligent, but not like one would expect from his past job. He is fantastic when recalling names, faces, and small snippets of informations associated with them, but most of his other knowledge is largely general. A clean and organized individual, he cannot stand clutter.

Zylen is well aware of the manor's secrets at this point. Whether through the veiled tasks Saile sends the group on as a distraction of some kind, hidden rooms and areas, bizarre relics and other objects, or simply the staff itself, he's learned not to trust everything he sees at face value. There is still a lot he doesn't know, and he's learned not to rush headfirst into things.

After becoming an Avatar, Zylen has begun to feel uncomfortable and annoyed around crowds. He takes comfort in being alone in the mansion's library, but has also begun to develop malign curiosity towards anyone who joins him. He has noted it as off and unlike him, but hasn't bothered looking into it.

---

Zylen is the focal point character and a former librarian's assistant. He works in Magpie Manor's library, reorganizing decades of neglect while also hunting down anomalous titles found within. As of current writing, no new books have been added, save for one recovered from a mission.

Before that however, he served in The Blameless, a cult centered around committing crimes without a name or under an ever-changing alias. In order to be let free of this cult, he had to kill another and take their name. He did this after a couple years of living and working with a librarian named Zylen Myst. The same name he now wears.

Zylen has an ally in the mansion staff, and is overall well-liked. His coworkers enjoy his company, save for Clancy, a former close friend turned enemy after feeling she was 'betrayed' by him.

As of Day 46, Zylen is an Avatar of the Lonely. His domain and abilities revolve around shadows. He has used these abilities to kill the pest that had been released into the manor.

Tidbits:
  • Zylen is an expert at reading others, as well as a handwriting expert.
  • He doesn't know how to make coffee/tea and has no idea he's been burning it at least half the time.
  • While Zylen comes off as an individual to most, he doesn't feel like an individual. This is in part to his time in The Blameless, as well as how he essentially stole his identity.
  • The Lonely has proven to be one of the most fitting fears for Zylen as time has gone on.
