No one was around to name Kintsugi when an egg, disguised as a rock, split apart and crumbled, exposing the soft-scaled dragon within. Forgotten Cave was a fitting name for his hatchplace. No one was around to protect him before his scales hardened, and things didn't get any better after they did, because no one was around then either. Golden scars littered his body from constant trial and error, constant turmoil against the beings of Shade threatening to take all he had. Things perhaps got marginally better when the dragon learned to fly, if only for the sense of freedom it gave Kintsugi, the choice of where he defended himself. But wherever he flew, he was still alone. -- At the Scorched Forest, the scarred dragon suddenly froze, an extinguished jackalope hanging from his jaws. Voices. He simultaneously was and was not a stranger to other dragons. He had learned their speech, or perhaps it was an instinctual knowledge within, but he had never been welcomed. His experiences with others was limited to defending his food or watching warily as battles waged against the beasts near his nest. But this time, things were different. The voices weren't the unified, strategic calls of a clan hunting, whether it be for food or resources. The voices were panicked, terrified cries of pain or delayed warnings of enemies that had already struck. The older dragon warily snuck closer, peering through the charred brush. A ragtag group stood before him: a purple Tundra, monochrome Mirror, and deep blue Guardian with purple wings and countless icy eyes running down her sides and tail. They were struggling against the beasts of the forest, badly. The team was thin, nearly starving. The scarred dragon assumed they had been driven to new hunting grounds without the right skills to fend in them. It wasn't his business. He knew it wasn't his business. He had no reason to care. But he had never seen others struggle before. He only knew other dragons to be in uniform teams, strategizing to bring down foes, and here these newcomers were, struggling as he did. He blinked. Oh. And that was why he was so transfixed. The scarred dragon readied himself to save the hunting team. It was simple, really; a couple of scratches took out the adversaries. The looks the dragons gave him had him shift awkwardly, not being used to seeing the admiration shining in their eyes. After breathless thanks, a line from one of them stuck with the scarred dragon; "You look like kintsugi pottery." This clan was the molten gold that put him back together. -- Kintsugi leads hunting parties and trains newcomers for the clan. He desperately wants to try more of a hands-off training style, but seeing a clanmate get hurt always spurs him to step in. |
