Biography
Ewei
The Nest Keeper
The young that are here hatched enter their lives with an abundant outpouring of love. Each pipping egg is surrounded by the numerous members of Mistwood, each cooing and crowing over the babe as if it were their own. A life begun in Mistwood is a celebrated one, bringing light to the gloom clearing. After the egg is hatched and the initial lively affection quiets, a melancholic air creeps in.
The elders know that a life in the wood is a sheltered one, they have each had their lives journeys and relish the copious solitude, but for a dragon to never venture out, to see the light of the morning or the foam of the tides or the valour of the mountains that lay leaps and bounds from their home, that is the saddest life of all. Every hatchling has a choice, they are never forced upon their destinies, but eventually they all depart. They are saddened leaving the nest, but emboldened by the fact that they will never know the pain of living a life without love.
Bio
Ewei is tasked with keeping an extra close eye upon the younglings. Everyone in Mistwood has a task, and this is theirs. They keep gentle watch over the hatchlings adventures, only intervening in case of impending injury. They are the caretaker, the storyteller, the perceived fighter to bumps in the night. They do not take their charges lightly. While it is a cute job, they often fret about having the nestlings leave for their own journeys through the forest. They must trust in their ability to create a stable foundation for the young ones to look back upon fondly, as they may just be the strongest memories the dragons have of their birthplace.
Drabble: Ewei’s Respite
Moonlight struggles through the thick leaves and fog, weak and battered as it arrives at a small hut perched within ancient tangled branches, finding a Skydancer awake in the dead of night. Gently they rub their claws over the back of a fitfully sleeping young dragon, mummering to her in a language unknown, tenderly pressing their forehead upon the young one’s brow. An egg glowing with a brilliant light rests propped against their side, glowing brighter in time with the elder’s words. The beam is made aware of how much light will exist after it, fading gentle into the night.

Ewei keeps this particular tome nearby for many reasons. It’s mostly used as a bedtime story book, the words to which often fall upon sleeping hatchling ears within minutes. The novel also daylights as a bargaining chip, luring nestlings out of tall trees or deep burrows with the promise of a tale, and also as a medicinal aid to distract the young ones as the get patched up from bumps and bruises. In their old age Ewei finds themself more reliant on the glasses they used to not need. This particular pair met its match with a impromptu Imperial vs Guardian flyweight brawl broke out and promptly steamrolled the bedraggled Skydancer. Well, they weren’t always a Nest keeper you know... |
