Samhain has been the king of Sinner's Bane for as long as the city has been around. Once a collection of ruined, broken down buildings, he cultivated it with love and care, drawing in the very best to staff every new building and using briars and brambles to shape the cracked stone into elegant structure. When creatures began hearing tell of a beautiful Neverland hidden deep inside the Tangled Wood, lit up and alluring every October 31st, they crawled out of the woodwork to the city, enthralled by its many indulgences until they forgot anything but decadence. And through it all, Samhain smiled in his eerie way and went about his merrymaking as though nothing were wrong. He rules now with an eye for mischief and a bias for havoc, watching mirthfully as his every flickering emotion seems to draw his citizens to mirroring. When he is happy, the night eternal sings with joy; when his mood is fouled, businesses close and the mood turns harsh. Despite all of this, nobody seems to pay any heed to the spell he casts on the city- he's such a mesmerizing presence, they insist, who wouldn't be dragged into his ever-changing mood? The day Samhain's egg hatched, a darkness like no other fell over the Starwood Strand- dark enough even to blot out the glowing blossoms that call the area home. His parents- two Coatls- shivered as they wrapped themselves tightly around the little glowing egg- and, as they felt it hatch, the cloying darkness overtook the house. Both parents cried out for their child, and they found him soon enough- they were so relieved neither of them would remember the way his eyes glittered purple before settling to the color that matched his parents. Samhain was always a weird thing- prone to much more shadow borne magic than his heritage belied, speaking to himself in strange languages as he sought out darker places. his feathery fluff grew longer than any other Coatl his parents had ever met- but they loved him, so with love and apprehension they simply kept it trimmed so their boy wouldn't arouse suspicion. Some neighbors- from the Wood, who had come to see the glowing stars like eerie blue fireflies- spoke hesitantly if at all to the child, whispering of the Dark Night and about the coming of the Veil... Samhain dutifully visits his parents' graves every year, on their anniversary, and catches them up on what he's been up to- various dastardly schemes and mesmers managed. He still misses them, but he's long since accepted their passing as an inevitability. After all, it's been 300 years. No fully Modern creature could live quite that long. |
