They grew up with their peers learning the ways of their ancestors, all the fighting techniques and tactics to dominate any battle. The strenuous fights would leave them sore and weak but over time they became a fierce warrior where nothing could beseech them. They rivaled their masters, became well respected, and soon well known by all. Their sharp girn before any fight would make others quiver at what their foe was about to inflict. Over time they were ready to take arms, the mighty weapon that their clan honed, a skill that brought the true fear forward from their enemies. Magic, a bright blue kind that would electrify the air and send a shock down anyone's spine. As Illume learned this challenging skill from the elders their markings would glow brightly, their eyes lighting up with more than just passion. This skill was dangerous and only given to those who could handle such power, lighting was at the core of the Genous clans' existence. This is what made them known where their rivals fear originated. This power would burn through any armor, burn its way through to their heart and take victory from the enemies dying hands. In time the clan grew hungry and needed to feed their growing clans population and appetite. The chief planned for a war to extend their border and take more land, the neighboring forest was in their sights. Warriors were readied, armor, and weapons in hand. They pushed a fierce battle, mowing down warriors and frightening the families out. Their weak defences lacked the strength the stories had foretold, no thought was given to this and assumed they had grown weak. Blood was shed, it was an unfair fight as the enemy clan lost many with few being able to flee quick enough. The warriors left with grins on their faces, joking about the easy victory, a disregard for the pain they caused. It took a day's walk to arrive home, stories of battle were told on this journey, victories and various challenges each of the older warriors had overcome. A faint smell of smoke and unease clouded the air, as tension grew the warrior grew silent. War had made its way home to the clan, the enemy had burnt everything to the ground. Illume stopped atop a peak overlooking the ruins, unable to process the sight before them. The other warriors rushed in silently, frantically looking for something to explain the devastation. No matter how loud their cries in anguish grew, they could not bring back what had been lost. A spark lit the ground and again, the village was enamoured in light. If only this light could represent the smiles and memories Illume treasured, but screams soon followed. Illume could do nothing but cry, this dissolved to anger with lightning engulfing their body. No amount of hate could undo what was already history. They stayed atop the peak for hours, unable to bring themself closer to the pain, hours turned to day. Finally they burned in their mind a goal, to uncover how this unfolded. |

Illume travelled onwards, to the next town covering their marking. They lingered, observing the conversations that treaded through the towns taverns, listened to tales encompassing their clan. Nothing but snarky remarks, brutal stories, terror and hate followed the Genous clan name. Illume privately disputed this notion, holding themself back from challenging every word while nearing the shadows. The next town was no different, they soon started seeking answers from those who seemed less scarred. Their responses were no different, only that a pure look of fear came before the remarks. What Illume had been brought up on, was challenged by those who held scars, this struggle of opposing views festered inside them. The evidence and stories began to outweigh their own memories. Something snapped in them, all that Illume knew fell apart, cracks formed in the elder's war battles and soon their own stories. Why was there no one defending the village? Why are we secluded from other clans? Who actually respected us? Was there really a lack of food or just a hunger for battle? Illume began to cry in the dark corner of the taven, unaware of their cloak slipping uncovering their marks. A small older dragon glanced over at them, "Oh, those marks!" Illume jumped, covering themself as quickly as possible in fear. "Yes! A young female dragon holds the exact same ones! But yours are much more vivid..." He trailed off. Bewildered, Illume took a moment examining what he had said, "You know someone... someone who looks like me?!" they almost shouted. "Now now, of course, no need to raise your voice. You might just find her on the outskirts on town." Illume stood up, rushing to the taven door as they hurriedly ushed out a Thank you as they moved on. Illume wandered the outer village, searching for this mystery dragon. Some time had passed, there was little area left to search but this was not where they planned on giving in. Approaching a monastery Illume hoped they might know who this dragon was and where she might be. A glint of blue caught their eye, across the brick wall in the garden of a neighboring establishment. This momentary glow reminded them of something homely, quickly they leaped over the wall with little thought only to be tackled to the ground. A large shimmering wildclaw stood atop their neck, yelling demands that Illume was deaf to, her wings held alluring dark blue marks alike their own. She pushed down on their neck, repeating herself, "Who sent you? Why are you here? I am not going back and you can't make me!" Illume shocked could only utter a meek Sorry? What? She let them stand, her hight towered Illume. She continued to barrage them with questions, Illume only had one answer. She explained how she had run from Genous when she was much younger, she feared what they would do to a dragon who was too weak to fight, who refused to fight. Over her secluded upbringing she encountered numerous thugs from the clan, all attempted to force her 'home'. Home, to a place that could never be her home. Her account only confirmed what Illume wished was not true. There was nothing but ruins anyway, the clan was gone. Illume had nothing, not even the memories of the place they believed was safe. Candor retorted Illumes bleak conclusion, "we have each other now..." |
