“Now, this just won’t do…” A warm bubbling glow illuminated the features of a man deep in thought, a hand rubbing his chin as he watched the cauldron before him simmer dangerously to the edge. The liquid inside was the color of sunshine, a bright orange which frothed to a lighter yellow. He stood in silence, tapping his foot against the cobble stone floor as he peered endlessly into the opaque contents of his brew. Silently he turned to a rickety wooden shelf, plucked a sprig of herb from an odd looking plant, then spun on his heel to drop it into the mixture. It surged downwards in the pot, shifting to green then a deep royal blue. The spiral grinned, an airy laugh leaving him as he filled a vial with the still warm potion. “Perfect~” Many moons ago, the devil grew tired of the interference of angels in his meddling. So, to balance the do-gooders in the world, he created a man in his own image to undermine their righteous miracles. Thus, a maniacal wizard known as Merlin was released unto the world. At least, that was what the ravings of religious figureheads spread amongst the people. In truth he was known by many names, Merlin was just the most well-known and respected. He was wild and untamable, rumored to dabble in necromancy and the dark arts. In reality, he hungered for knowledge and was well versed in magic, which he mostly used for good acts towards the everyday people. |

Aside from being a powerful wizard, he was also a well revered adviser to a king of his homelands. It was work Merlin took pride in, hoping to lead the powerful leader away from the tempting corruption of his status; “You are the king, the head of this kingdom. Use your power in an intelligent manner, for it is good to be merciful. However, still be strict to those who may wish to use your mightiness for their personal gain.” For years to come, the rule of Merlin’s king was one of prosperity, though it is only a matter of before his unchecked power gave way to his greed. It wasn’t until a beautiful queen found her way into the kingdom, offering an alliance between their kingdoms. She was fair and mighty, with many lords beckoning for her favor. Though none were successful. It wasn’t until the king desired her for himself did his selfishness get the better of him. He bid her to stay, forever a prisoner at his castle; she was expected to dine with him, stroll under supervision in his courtyards, and eventually become his queen in marriage. It was a choice Merlin was highly disapproving of, though he was unable to change his lord's young mind. The wizard allowed the queen to confide in him, her lament at her stolen freedom tugged at his heart. In an attempt to free her from the confines of her tower, he turned her into a raven. Their escape went smoothly, the large bird perched on his staff gained no question from the guard, Merlin was quite odd afterall. Though her disappearance was quickly discovered, with his adviser's official resignation, the king went mad from betrayal, swearing to punish his once beloved friend from stealing away his love.
