_ _ Magnolia-by-the-Sea is a large, rural clan in the Worldedge Wetlands. Originally founded by two wanderers who found a hatchling washed up on the nearby beach, it has since grown into a peaceful community largely centered around farming, hunting, and trade. It is nominally ruled by Jim, the patriarch of the founding family, but leadership is primarily handled by a loose council consisting of his three oldest daughters - particularly Frankenberry, the eldest. The culture of the clan is warm and welcoming, and the clan as a whole has a reputation for taking in and protecting those who have faced persecution elsewhere - particularly children. The clan's remoteness and tranquility have made it the perfect destination for a number of dragons wishing to live out their lives without undue strife, and an ideal home base for those who desire a peaceful rest between adventures. The clan's unabated growth since its founding has resulted in a bustling town nestled amongst the trees. The town consists largely of wooden buildings, many built upon stilts to protect against flooding both from the sea and the surrounding swampland. The sides of these buildings are covered in lattices so hung with flowering vines that they would be indistinguishable from the surrounding forest were it not for the cleared pathways between them and the gentle smoke rising from the occasional chimney. Along the nearby shoreline, a few dragons have made their homes alongside the modest dock and lighthouse that greet visitors by sea. Just at the edge of the town lies the grove of towering magnolia trees which give the clan its name. The clan's nests are situated here among the thick roots and under the green shade. Most children born in the clan or brought in from elsewhere are raised here by Jim, aside from occasional exceptions when families choose to rear their offspring themselves - said practice is in no way frowned upon, though such children are often left with Jim as a babysitter anyway when their parents are busy. Several farms surround the inland sides of the town, taking advantage of the fertile soil and natural irrigation of the territory. They grow almost anything imaginable - there are orchards with all kinds of fruit, wide fields of corn and wheat, spices and herbs, and any kind of vegetable, fruit, or berry you could possibly ask for. The verdant wilderness beyond the farms supports many hunters who work year-round to bring meat to the hungry mouths of the clan, and the swamps and shoreline supply endless fish to the local anglers. When it comes to trade, the clan primarily exports food, textiles, and furs. As they lack their own dedicated traders, they are somewhat reliant on the routes of travelling merchants. However, the clan's strong lean towards self-reliance, which sometimes borders on insularity, ensures that they remain - for the most part - unbothered by this. The clan stays out of worldly affairs as a rule, and while they will act as a safe refuge for any who seek shelter and resolutely defend them from pursuers, they seldom offer aid beyond their own rigidly kept borders aside from gifts of food and resources. The warriors of the clan are few but strong, and their watchful sentries and forest wardens give the clan ample warning when foes encroach on their territory and their peaceful way of life. |
