Dubultses

I walked below the red and cyan sky
Empty hometown, everything was wrong
My childhood home towering above me in its full three-story glory

Soft grass below my feet, sharp pebbles over the road
A warm summer breeze quickly turned cold as I saw a figure stand along the path
"Nice outfit," he said, smiling a smile that never reached his eyes.
He wore a simple, but striking floral shirt, something I'd also wear personally.
I replied: "You too."
It took me a while to realize that the person whom had struck up a friendly conversation with me
...was me.

I did not seem to care about me. He did not seem to care about him?
"A mask would make your look more memorable"
What a wild suggestion, but not a completely ridiculous one
"Here, I can show you some!" The view faded away to give way to the line of masks, seemingly endless.
All of them neatly labelled in a handwriting too neat to be mine, but too similar to not.
My eyes glid along the labels.
I could taste the unease.
As I processed what each of them meant, the air seemed to quickly drop in temperature.
Each concept, more terrifying, vile or dreadful. I could taste the fear, cold and bitter and almost numbing.
That realization broke something, I think.
The world stuttered, pixels where they should not be, shifting and jumping all over the place

All I could see was the other me.
And he was not happy.
Not angry.
But that smile was gone.
And so were his eyes.
And so were mine.
