Virgil

"After all, wasn't it their mistake? To trust such an important task to someone so unshakably mortal? There was never going to be a happy ending to this story.

-Tired paranoid man who constantly hallucinates
-Probably shouldn't be trusted with sharp items
-Has permanent dark circles under all his eyes
-Guards an ancient being that whispers to him all day and night, even in his dreams
-Just wants rest and to see his family again

-Originally, a war hero who volunteered to guard the Darkness forever, but was instead consumed by them. Due to his resistance to the Darklings, it was believed that he would be the perfect guard.
-During his time as a guard, he wasn't allowed to sleep as Darklings fed on nightmares. The many years of not sleeping and the whispers night and day took their toll on his health - maybe not physically, but mentally; and one day in a delusional haze the Darklings tricked him into thinking his family had been captured and he opened their prison. He was completely overtaken by them in moments, and became a sort of vessel for them. A meat puppet with his consciousness still screaming and watching but unable to do anything. But at least he had pulled one last trick, and trapped them in his body. It lessened their power a little, to be physical. The Darklings were not happy about that.
-They took their vengeance on his planet, using his own hands to personally destroy those he loved, before moving onto the rest of the galaxy. They were eventually halted by something made of light - something that wasn't entirely benevolent, but definitely territorial.
-Still kind of...in there somewhere and has small moments of clarity before he remembers that he destroyed his planet..then he just willingly gives up control again.
-A pitiful villain. He no longer has the strength or will to fight the millions and trillions of Darklings inhabiting his body.

Extra Notes:
-Guarding the Darklings were necessary, since any sort of malfunction in the cage would have led to their escape, and considering how gruesome the war to capture them was...no one wanted to go through it again.
-Virgil was born with a certain resistance to the Darklings due to his mother having been contaminated by one during the time of his birth. This also led to Virgil having a different appearance from the rest of his race (the rest of his race being extremely pale with hair in various shades of blonde, while his skin was more of a tan color and his hair was black). He's the only being that managed to survive in this way. This resistance also meant the Darklings could possess him without tearing his body apart; that could be seen as both a bad and good thing for him.
-While supplies were sent, no living being was allowed to enter the prison besides him due to the risk of contamination by Darklings. While he understands that in a way, the loneliness still ate him alive - almost quite literally.
